Matt Reeves CONFIRMED To Direct and Produce ‘Batman’
In what has been an up and down roller coaster ride when it comes to the upcoming Batman film, fans finally got some good news today. According to both Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. have come to a deal where Matt will not only direct the film but will serve as producer. This news comes on the heels of last weeks disheartening news that talks with Reeves had broken down and that he might walk away from the offer completely. There were rumors circulating that Reeves and Warner Bros. had been in talks for some time before news broke that he was offered the job and that Reeves agent leaked the news to media in an effort to gain leverage. The PR at Warner Bros. has been chaotic to say the least and one of the main issues is the revolving door of directors that they have lost for one reason or another. Ben Affleck was set to direct the film but stepped away a few weeks ago and that is when Matt was named the front runner. The Flash film has lost two directors now and its script is back at page 1.
Matt Reeves made a statement after the news was made official saying,
“I have loved the Batman story since I was a child, He is such an iconic and compelling character, and one that resonates with me deeply. I am incredibly honored and excited to be working with Warner Bros. to bring an epic and emotional new take on the Caped Crusader to the big screen.”
Warner Bros. also had a comment regarding the hire,
“We are thrilled to have Matt Reeves taking the helm of Batman, the crown jewel of our DC slate,” said Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures Group. “Matt’s deep roots in genre films and his evolution into an emotional world-building director make him the perfect filmmaker to guide the Dark Knight through this next journey.”
This is fantastic news and could be huge in helping keep the current DCEU alive. Warner Bros. has done well with its hiring of directors so far and are even in talks to bring on Mel Gibson to direct the sequel to Suicide Squad. I love this hire and Matt was one of my top choices from the moment I knew Ben was stepping down. How do you feel about the hire? Should WB have looked elsewhere or do you think Matt will do the film justice? The script was written by Ben Affleck and Geoff Johns with current rewrites handed in by Chris Terrio. Please comment below and let us know how you feel and as always please continue to follow MFST for all of your DC and Marvel news.
