The NBA season kicks off tonight, but before it does it is possible we will have our first extension of the league new year. The Dallas Mavericks and head coach Rick Carlisle are closing in on a five-year extension that would run through the 2020-21 season per Eddie Sefko of the Dallas Morning News.

Carlisle’s originally signed a four-year deal before the 2012-13 season and is one of the most well-respected coaches in the game today. He won Coach of the Year honors for the Pistons back in 2002 and guided the Mavs to the NBA title in 2011. He’s 619-431 over 13 full seasons as an NBA head coach, and owns a 338-220 record with Dallas since he took over in 2008.

With a roster that is not as talented as the one that took home the hardware in 2011, this year may be one of the most challenging of Carlisle’s career as a head coach. You can read Connell’s take on the Mavs new additions here.
