Max Stassi is becoming a must-own fantasy catcher
Raise your hand if Max Stassi was on your fantasy baseball radar before the season. If you raised your hand, you are a liar.
I wasn’t even thinking about Max Stassi as a fantasy baseball option. I was wrong.
Stassi is the catcher to own on the Astros team and on your fantasy baseball roster.
Sure, he has seen an extended opportunity now with Brian McCann on the DL, but he was seeing regular at-bats even with a healthy McCann. Right now, Stassi is the better offensive catcher and his improving defense could be the catalyst to seeing even more playing time when McCann eventually returns.
Stassi, 27, has flirted with the major leagues each of the last five seasons, never appearing in more than 14 games. He had six extra-base hits in the majors before this season and through 31 games in 2018 he has already eclipsed 13.
He ranks second among all American League rookies with an .929 OPS. Third in batting average (.303) and OBP (.367).
He is CRUSHING left-handed pitching batting .500 against lefties in 32 at-bats.
“(He) has swung the bat probably better than we even expected, given that he’s been predominantly a soft platoon/backup player or backup catcher,” manager A.J. Hinch said. “It’s hard to contribute consistently in that role so I’ve been very happy with that. His receiving has gotten so much better over the last year or two and we’re seeing it impact pitchers, seeing it impact balls and strikes, and that’s a tribute to the work he’s put in.”
Stassi is currently riding a career-high seven game hitting streak and has collected hits in 12 of 15 games this month.
With no timetable for Brian McCann’s return, Stassi will continue to man the everyday catcher duties for Houston. He is owned 4.5% of fantasy leagues on ESPN which is an insanely small amount of owners taking advantage of his stellar play.
Personally, I grabbed him in one dynasty league and another redraft points format and he is already paying dividends. I suggest you do the same.
