‘Mayans M.C.’ Pilot Episode Recap
The new Kurt Sutter/FX biker drama, Mayans M.C., premiered last night. The series is a spinoff of Sons of Anarchy (SOA), which Sutter wrote for as well. Here’s what happened on Tuesday night’s premiere episode.
Ezekiel Reyes played by J.D. Pardo is just out of prison. He’s a new prospect in the Mayans M.C while his brother Angel is already a member. We met the Mayans’ charter president for Southern California, Obispo Losa (Michael Irby) when he walked into a seamstress shop. It’s a smokescreen business for their club. Far in the back, the M.C. were packaging $2.4 million in heroin into formal dresses for Miguel Galindo’s cartel.
The Mayans were supposed to deliver the “goods” to Las Vegas. As to be expected, all did not go well. The Bass Town Traps (a rival Samoan M.C.) stole the cargo by causing the truck to roll onto its side thanks to paintball guns fired into the windshield and ramming the truck off the road. A small gun battle ensued. A Mayans passenger got shot in his shoulder but lived. Another Mayan, the driver, was stuck in the burning truck. Ezekiel managed to free him before the explosion.
Back at the clubhouse, Miguel Galindo (Danny Pino) questioned club members and suspected one of the M.C. members was a snitch. “Deliveries ” are never made by the same route, day or time. Unaware of club etiquette, Ezekiel spoke up and told Galindo about a tattoo on the wrist of one of the masked robbers. Galindo wanted the Samoan M.C. president brought in for questioning.
After Galindo left, Losa backhanded Ezekiel and informed him to never speak unless spoken to. The Mayans escorted the wounded M.C. member through an underground tunnel to doctor Estrada to be patched up. The Mayan boys then went to a bar called Diama to collect a package. Later, Oakland charter President of the Mayans, Marcus Alvarez, rode into town for business. He also appeared in SOA. Ezekiel got stuck washing Alvarez’s bike while a club meeting goes on and intel was shared about the Samoan M.C.
Its decided they would go to the cemetery where the Samoan’s have their headquarters. They surrounded the Samoans while the Samoans surround the Mayans. A gunfight ensued and the Samoans lost men, but the Mayans remain intact. Of course, the Samoan president tries to get away but thanks to the Sons Of Anarchy boys, it didn’t work. They questioned the president and found out that a woman was the rebel.
Adelita (Carla Baretta) was the mastermind behind the heist. She has a motto “Kill the devil, resurrect Mexico”. Galindo later cut off the Somoan’s arm and he bled to death. Ezekiel must help get rid of the body. Later in the episode, it is revealed Ezekiel’s brother Angel is the snitch and is in league with the rebels and Adelita. Ezekiel must meet his cousin secretly at his father’s shop where its revealed that Ezekiel wanted to take down Miguel Galindo (trust me for a good reason. I’m getting to it).
Toward the beginning of the episode in a flashback sequence, it showed Ezekiel as a fresh-faced teen in love with his high school girlfriend Emily (Sarah Bolger). In another flashback sequence, it was revealed that Ezekiel murdered a cop and was going to be sent to prison for 20 years. He didn’t want her to go through the heartache of his sentence. At this time, Emily reveals she’s pregnant. As he tries to run after her the prison guards tackle him. At this point, we get to see Gemma Teller-Morrow (Katey Sagal) waiting in the visitor area of the prison exclaim to the guards “What assholes”.
In typical Kurt Sutter fashion, we discover Emily had the baby but drum roll please she married the drug cartel, Miguel Galindo. The episode ended with Adelita’s rebels getting ready to kidnap Emily and son as payback to Galindo. Edward James Olmos plays Felipe Reyes, Ezekiel and Angel’s father. He was featured briefly in the episode as a loving father.
