Mayweather–Pacquiao: The Fight of the Millenium
Well, it’s finally happening. The fight of a lifetime, the one that everyone was waiting for is only a day away. It’s hard to believe that most analysts did not think the time would ever come for Floyd Mayweather vs. Manny Pacquiao. People practically start salivating at the thought, the two premier boxers of their respective generation going at it. Who wouldn’t want to see that? The move makes complete sense. In a time where boxing is on the decline, a contest from these two superstars could possibly rejuvenate the sport as a whole. At minimum it will become the center of attention for millions of enthralled spectators across the globe. Boxing’s past glory will never be completely restored, but for one brief moment of time, one single night, all the world with know of its relevance once more.
All the factors involved only lead to one remaining question, what took so long for this match to finally happen? Was this the plan all along? Everyone knows that Floyd Mayweather is a proper businessman, who makes the most out of every opportunity, and this will not be any different. He is getting a larger portion of the profits and he deserves it. His uncanny ability to efficiently build media coverage, along with popular interest, is ridiculous. After all, his name is “Money” May. If Mayweather actually intended on timing the fight perfectly, so he’d have the upper hand in every aspect, it likely worked out as well as he could ever have hoped.
Pacquiao is no longer in his prime, although Mayweather is not getting any younger either, but it appears this should be Mayweather’s fight to lose. Manny has lost two of his last five fights. However, he is still considered the number two pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
When it comes time for that ringside bell to chime, and both fighters go toe-to-toe, this is simply must see-TV. With Mayweather’s defensive style and Pacquiao’s ability to throw the knockout blow, we will surely be in for a show. I lean towards Mayweather; he has had a bit less wear and tear on his body. He seems to have a bit of an edge in the quickness and speed department, but no one is counting Pacquiao out. Manny could be the man to finally put a loss in “Money” May’s contest history. Maybe there is a reason Floyd Mayweather was putting this off for so long?
