Mercer vs Colorado Preview

Mercer vs Colorado

In the conclusion of the Paradise Jam, we will crown either Mercer or Colorado champion. The final game tips off at 8:30 p.m. in Lynchburg, VA.

For Colorado, this tournament has been a coming out party of McKinley Wright IV. Wright scored 21 points and dished out nine assists as the Buffaloes withstood a late charge from Drake before posting an 86-81 victory in the semifinals to set up the meeting with the Bears.

Unlike in the opening-round game, when Wright needed to make a 3-pointer as time expired to allow them to advance, the Buffaloes never trailed against Drake, which got within one point on two occasions before Wright answered. The freshman from Minnesota hit a jumper and then made a three-point play to help extend Colorado’s lead before eventually fouling out with 2:23 remaining.

“I thought our guys, for a very quick turnaround, to take that game plan, did a great job,” Buffaloes coach Tad Boyle told reporters. “Last night, we didn’t panic when we were down, and we didn’t panic when we were up and (Drake) made a run.”

Mercer defeated Drexel 78-59 in their semifinal matchup to advance to the championship game. It was a breeze on the court thanks to senior guard Ria’n Holland, who scored 29 points–one point shy of what would have been his third career thirty-point performance. Junior Stephon Jelks recorded his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds to help down low for the Bears.

Mercer is 4-1 on the young season, defeating decent mid-majopr teams like Liberty and Jacksonville State. Their lone loss was by nine points to a powerful UCF team, who looks to compete in the AAC this season.

Prediction

According to ESPN’s Basketball Power Index, Mercer actually has the better odds to win at 63.5% and Vegas has been going back and forth to -3.5 to Mercer, but that has shifted to about EVEN currently. Either way this looks to be a tightly contested matchup.

The Buffaloes have need some stroked of luck and hot shooting down the stretch to even be in this championship game. I say the luck continues as they squeak by a talented Mercer team.
