michigan football safety

Kickoff is less than two months away and we are in the dead period for any news on the team and in college football in general. With that being said, let’s look over each position on the team and who is competing for the starting position and predict who will win each position. Today I will look at the free safety position on the Michigan football team. This position has four guys fighting for the top spot as Delano Hill is the clear leader on the team with backups who haven’t seen any action. Louis Grodman and Jacob West both have no experience and look to maybe have a chance to backup Hill this season with the competition only being between them and the lone incoming freshman at free safety. Josh Metellus is the lone incoming freshman who will have some work cut out for him as he takes on Grodman and West for the backup spot. These four men are going to fight like hell to prove to coach Harbaugh that they are the starting free safety at Michigan. Let’s breakdown all 10 candidate’s.

A sophomore from Walled Lake Northern, Grodman has one year under his belt on the team, but nothing on the field. Knowing the playbook an extra year could give him a little boost over the rest of the competition.

The lone freshman coming in from Flanagan, Metellus had 50 tackles and five and a half sacks his senior year last year. Metellus doesn’t know the playbook as well as West or Grodman, but his skills could push him over both of them.

Jacob West

A sophomore from Pinckney, West is like Grodman where he has a year of knowing the playbook, but has yet to execute it on the field. West will have somewhat of an advantage over Metellus, but it might not be enough.

The only player on this list with experience and started last season is Delano Hill. Hill has 67 tackles, two and a half tackles for loss, two pass deflections and one fumble recovery in his career so far. Hill has no chance of losing his starting job to anyone else on this list. Hill has actually played in a collegiate game compared to the rest of the group and started last year, no chance he loses it here.

Who Starts at Free Safety for Michigan Come Week One?

The starter is easily going to be Delano Hill, but with a very inexperienced backup choice behind him, it was hard to figure out who will be where. Check it out below.

  1. Delano Hill
  2. Josh Metellus
  3. Louis Grodman
  4. Jacob West
