Michigan Football Position Preview: Right Guard
Kickoff is less than two months away and we are in the dead period for any news on the team and in college football in general. With that being said, let’s look over each position on the team and who is competing for the starting position and predict who will win each position. Today I will look at the right guard position. This position has two guys fighting for the top spot as Kyle Kalis has been a solid starter at the position. Michael Onwenu is an incoming freshman who will look to make a scene and possibly start over the redshirt senior. These two men are going to fight like hell to prove to coach Harbaugh that they are the starting right guard at Michigan. Let’s breakdown both candidate’s.
Kalis is the powerhouse starter here. He was on ESPN.com All-Big Ten Freshman team in 2013, starting nine games at right guard and appeared on special teams in the other three. 2014 he made seven starts and played in all 12 games and last season he started all 13 games at the right guard spot. He was on the 2015 All-Big Ten third team (media) and All-Big Ten Honorable Mention (coaches). Kalis has a lot of experience and it will take a lot of strength and impressive blocking skill to knock him out, especially by a freshman.
The incoming freshman from Cass Tech, Michael Onwenu is the underdog in this battle and wants to win and start at the right guard spot. He was ranked the eighth best guard in the nation and will battle to prove he is the number one on the right side for Michigan.
Who is the Starting Right Guard Come Week One?
Back to back battles between two people. This time it is between a redshirt senior and an incoming freshman. This one is written on the walls before anyone even hits the field.
