Miles Morales Is Spider-Man In Sony’s New Animated Film
Are you a Spider-Man fan? Are you tired of the countless live action and animated Spider-Man films geared towards the story of Peter Parker? Well then friend you are in luck! Sony Pictures Animation announced today that the next ‘Untitled’ Animated Spider-Man film will feature Miles Morales and not the often seen Peter Parker. Even if you are a fan of Peter Parker, you have to admit that this is breath of fresh air. When there were talks of Marvel Studios gaining access to Spider-Man from Sony, fans jumped at the notion that we might see not one but two versions of Spider-Man in the MCU, one being Peter Parker and the other being Miles Morales.
The Lego Movie creators, Phil Lord and Chris Miller will pen the script and serve as producers. The film will be directed by Bob Persichetti (Puss in Boots). The film currently has a release date of December 21, 2018 but that could change.
A little back story on Miles Morales for those who are not familiar with the character. Miles first made his appearance in 2011 during the Ultimate Fallout #4 in the Ultimate Marvel Universe.
In that universe the former Spider-Man, Peter Parker has died and Miles takes up the mantle. In the Miles Morales: Ultimate Spider-Man, we see Miles actually team with Peter Parker – now alive – to defeat Norman Osborn. Miles does have similar traits to Peter Parker’s Spider-Man but he also has some that Peter did not.
Miles was bitten by a spider with a different genetic makeup. Miles ‘spider-sense’ is not as strong as Peter Parker’s but he does have the ability to camouflage himself and two very potent weapons – a venom sting and a venom blast. The former was powerful enough to drive away Venom during his first encounter with Miles.
Miles Morales is a fan favorite that is for sure and one day I am sure he will make his live action debut. We have now seen three versions of Peter Parker on the big screen – Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man 1-3), Andrew Garfield (Amazing Spider-Man 1-2), and Tom Holland (Captain America: Civil War, Spider-Man: Homecoming). I am very excited that we got this confirmation today and I hope that this will lead to more films including the character.
What are your thoughts on the upcoming animated film featuring Miles Morales? Are you Peter Parker for life or will this be a good change? Should Sony keep Parker for the live action films and leave Miles to the animated department?
We will see Peter Parker swing back into action this summer as he takes on Michael Keaton’s Vulture.
