The end of the Paul Johnson era as the Georgia Tech head coach (and football coach in general) as the triple-option legend announced his retirement before the bowl season.
The triple option has been lethal in Johnson’s last year, averaging an FBS-best 334.92 yards per game on the ground. Six different Yellow Jackets — including quarterbacks TaQuon Marshall and Tobias Oliver — have gained more than 300 rushing yards in 2018.
While the GT defense is impressive from a total defense standpoint (367.8 yards per game), that figure is skewed by the fact that Georgia Tech consistently keeps its offense on the field. A defense that gives up 5.90 yards per play is something that should be very concerning if Minnesota’s defense can get a few stops.
Minnesota qualified for this bowl berth on the last week of the regular season with a 37-15 victory over Wisconsin–their first win in the battle for Paul Bunyan’s Axe since 2003.
The Gophers will be playing with freshman QB Tanner Morgan who stepped in for Zack Annexstad when he went down with multiple injuries mid-season. Morgan improved as the season progressed–he has explosive weapons in receivers Tyler Johnson and Rashod Bateman (a combined 123 catches, 1,782 yards, 16 TDs). Freshman Mohamed Ibrahim has emerged as a move-the-chains running back.
Minnesota defense is 76th in the country in run defense at 170.7 yards per game. They have allowed two teams Illinois and Nebraska to light them up for 430 and 383 rushing yards, respectively.
Georgia Tech does not make stops on defense averaging 5.90 yards per play against them. They will need to control the time of possession with their run-heavy style in order to keep their defense off of the field.
