MLS Fantasy Manager 2016 week 18 is a short week that only counts this week’s Wednesday matches where 12 teams are playing. This means eight teams aren’t fielding any players so you’ll have to do the best you can or use a wild-card to fill out a roster. I’m going to keep it short because of this short week and I’ll be back with a full pick list for this weekend’s full round of games.

TOP FORWARD PICKS

All three of these picks are gambles because of this week’s strange schedule. No one has a shot at double points because of how they split it but that doesn’t change how the real managers are going to try to handle their stars’ minutes. Tesho Akindele has the best shot at starting because his role as a starter or substitute changes depending on the opponent’s line-up. Akindele matches up well against Seattle and I think he’ll get the start to rest Maxi Urruti’s legs. Fanendo Adi and Bradley Wright-Phillips are the usual starters for their respective teams and there is a good chance each star will get some rest this week. However, they could be brought in as super-subs late in the game depending on the situation. They both will produce some big points if they play, that’s a given this week, but who is to say they will—manager beware.

Bradley Wright-Phillips, New York Red Bulls, $11.1

Fanendo Adi, Portland Timbers, $10.2

Tesho Akindele, F.C. Dallas, $7.4

TOP MIDFIELD PICKS

The same risks go for these starting midfielders as it does for the forwards I picked. They’re all key players for each of their teams and have pulled a ton of weight in each team’s success. Michael Barrios is having a break-out year while Mike Grella has turned into a solid midfielder and Benny Feilhaber is just as great as ever. I think Oscar Pareja will go for the win in Seattle so he’ll have to start Barrios to do that and if he doesn’t start, he’ll end up a substitute as well. Mike Grella will most likely start but I don’t see him going the full-90, he’ll produce no matter how long he’s on the field. Benny Feilhaber is the biggest gamble because he’s not as young as he used to be and he needs some rest at some point this year, this Wednesday is as good a time as any. I think Feilhaber could be used as a substitute if Sporting Kansas City gets in trouble but the game is still within reach. He’ll see at least 30 minutes worth of playing time if the game gets bad and he doesn’t start and he’ll only see an hour’s worth of play if he does start.

Michael Barrios, F.C. Dallas, $8.1

Mike Grella, New York Red Bulls, $8.2

Benny Feilhaber, Sporting Kansas City, $11.3

TOP DEFENSIVE PICKS

These three usual starters should all see the field for the full match this week because they’ve become so indispensable to their teams’ success. Walker Zimmerman has turned into the workhorse of the F.C. Dallas back line as he’s become an amazing two-way player with his strong attack and even stronger defensive abilities. Sal Zizzo has helped glue together a back line that had a horrible start to their season. Jordan Harvey is helping keep the Whitecaps afloat in the Western Conference playoff race with his consistently strong play. Each player could see some rest this weekend but in these types of conference matches, the real managers don’t want to take any chances with the back lines.

Walker Zimmerman, F.C. Dallas, $6.7

Sal Zizzo, New York Red Bulls, $6.5

Jordan Harvey, Vancouver Whitecaps $6.8

GOALKEEPER PICK OF THE WEEK

Luis Robles, New York Red Bulls, $6.3

He’s at home against a disjointed Orlando City S.C. squad with no permanent manager and no Kaka. It’s going to take some brilliant, cohesive play to get anything past him this weekend and I don’t think O.C.S.C. have it in them.
