MLS Fantasy Manager 2017 week six
MLS Fantasy Manager Top Picks
TOP FORWARD PICKS
Erick “Cubo” Torres, Houston Dynamo, $8.7
“Cubo” Torres is impossible to deny at the moment. He’s playing amazing soccer at home and on the road against strong opponents. He has scored a goal every week he has played and had a hat trick last week. This could be the week he doesn’t score a goal but I doubt it against a weak team like the New England Revolution. I don’t foresee him getting another hat trick but he is definitely going to have something to say about the final score in this match. He’s just too good right now to leave out of a line-up.
Cyle Larin, Orlando City S.C., $9.2
Cyle Larin is getting a lot of attention from clubs overseas and it’s easy to see why. Larin has the pedigree of a natural striker with his speed and attacking prowess. Orlando City S.C. plays at home against the New York Red Bulls this weekend and I think Larin will be able to pick apart their defense. The Red Bulls have let in eight goals so far this season and that’s a goals against average that doesn’t bode well with Larin bearing down on your back line. He should pick up big points for goals this match but if he doesn’t then I think he will still find a way to contribute.
Cristian Colman/Maxi Urruti, F.C. Dallas, $8.3/$8.7
This is a tough pick this week because it’s tough to say who exactly will be stating at forward this weekend for F.C. Dallas because of their midweek loss in the CONCACAF Champions League semifinals. They played a starting squad that worked their hearts out and Urruti was subbed off with a minor injury while Colman went the full 90. Reports out of training say that Urruti was back training with the usual starters today so he could be ready to go. Colman is having a slump to start the season and playing against a weak team like Minnesota United could help him find his goal scoring form. It’s a gamble picking either player but I think they’re worth having in a line-up, even on the bench, and waiting until the game day rosters are released to decide to play them or not. I think whoever plays at forward this weekend for Dallas will have some goals to their name.
TOP MIDFIELD PICKS
Kellyn Acosta, F.C. Dallas, $6.9
Kellyn Acosta is becoming the most important player for F.C. Dallas with Mauro Diaz out injured. He plays hard every match and creates opportunities with his insane work rate. He’s playing too well right now to keep out of the match completely. I’m not sure if he will start so he could be seen as another gamble but I think he’ll play and have something to say about the outcome of the match. He’ll pick up big points for attacking and this could be either from goals or assists but he’ll pick those points up if he steps foot on the pitch. If he doesn’t get the nod to start then look for Paxton Pomykal to earn some playing time and he’s a great addition to a roster at his price as well.
Romain Alessandrini, Los Angeles Galaxy, $9.4
Romain Alessandrini was one of the Galaxy’s big offseason signings and he’s starting to look like he was worth every penny as the season carries on. He has been on fire his past couple of matches and I think that form will continue at home against the struggling Montreal Impact. He’s not just scoring goals either, he’s also assisting and creating opportunities for the Galaxy attack. I think he’ll come away this weekend with one of each and that means a double-digit match for Galaxy’s new star. He’s a smart pick for team captain and that means double the points.
Anibal Godoy, San José Earthquakes, $7.3
I’m not sure what lit a fire under the ass of Anibal Godoy but it has worked out well for the Earthquakes this season. He’s playing the best soccer of his MLS career and it couldn’t come at a better time. The Earthquakes have had a rough time the past couple of seasons and they need a primed player in the midfield. He’s not just scoring goals either, he’s also picking up assists and being a nuisance to any defense he plays. He should have a tough time against the Seattle Sounders but I think he’ll come through for San José. I doubt he’ll have a multi-goal match but I know he’ll contribute to the attack and midfield defense. He will get bonuses for his passing on top of attacking but he will also get bonuses for making stops and clearances. He’s also a great pick at his price.
TOP DEFENSIVE PICKS
Matt Hedges, F.C. Dallas, $6.6
Matt Hedges is another player that could see some rest but the F.C. Dallas defense will already be missing too much with Maynor Figueroa suspended so I doubt he’ll sit. Hedges is Dallas’s best defender and I think he’ll have to play to lead whatever defenders set up in the back. I don’t think that Minnesota will do much scoring this game and I’ll be surprised if they can net even one goal. This means that Hedges will get a lot of points for a clean sheet bonus but I think he’ll add to that with clearances and other defensive play.
Ike Opara, Sporting Kansas City, $5.3
Ike Opara can be one of the best defenders in the league this season if he stays healthy. He has the talent and soccer intelligence to help lead the Sporting Kansas City back line. He’s great in the air and unbelievable on his feet. Opara is a great partner in the back for Matt Besler since they work so well together. Kansas City plays Colorado this weekend and this will not be a high scoring match with such strong defenses playing each other. I think that this match is going to end 0-0 and that means a clean sheet bonus to go along with any other points Opara picks up. He could have a double-digit match if he makes enough great stops.
Jared Watts, Colorado Rapids, $5.6
Most of what I said above could also be applied to Jared Watts and the Colorado defense. This match has defensive battle written all over it but I think the Rapids will have to do most of the stopping since Kansas City has the stronger attack. Colorado bases their game around their defense and Watts is a big part of that. He’s going to earn plenty of bonuses for his clearances and defense but he’s going to get the most of his points from a clean sheet.
GOALKEEPER PICK OF THE WEEK
Jesse Gonzalez, F.C. Dallas, $4.6
This is another tough roster choice because of the midweek international match but I think Jesse Gonzalez is going to get the start. It’s a great opportunity to get some playing time against a weaker opponent and it will save some energy for Chris Seitz. F.C. Dallas has two starting goalkeepers on their roster and either one of them is capable of amazing things. Gonzalez still has a lot to learn at his young age even if he’s capable of starting for any other team in the league. I think he’ll be able to have a great match against Minnesota and it’s just too good of a chance to pass up for coach Oscar Pareja to give him minutes. Look for him to earn a clean sheet with plenty of saves.
