MLS Fantasy Manager Week 7
MLS Fantasy Manager Week 7 is upon us with missing internationals, suspensions, and season ending injuries. This week has Chicago Fire and Montreal Impact on bye while New York City FC and Philadelphia Union play two games. Bad news for anyone with top points earner Ike Opara ($7.3, Sporting Kansas City) on their roster as he ruptured his Achilles tendon on Sunday night leaving him out for the season.
Top Forward Picks
Fanendo Adi, Portland Timbers, $9.3
Fanendo Adi has had a few impressive performances for Portland the past few weeks. He’s been one of the few shining bright spots for the Timbers offense this season, especially at home. This week expansion team New York City FC travels to Portland to play their second game of the week. That’s the type of situation Adi loves to pounce on and his pace will eat up an NYCFC defense that has yet to figure each other out who hates to play on turf.
Fernando Aristeguieta, Philadelphia Union, $7.7
Aristeguieta and David Villa (NYCFC, $10.3) are two forwards with two games this week. What separates Aristeguieta from Villa as a better pick isn’t just his price but also his offensive output. Philadelphia Union are not winning games and they’re dropping much-needed points but they’re still scoring goals. There’s a great chance that his games against expansion NYCFC and a weakened New England Revolution defense will result in multiple goals.
Jozy Altidore, Toronto FC, $9.6
Altidore still hasn’t completely clicked with his stacked midfield but Toronto travels away to play a depleted FC Dallas defense that is hitting its usual April-July skid. Both teams are coming off some bad performances but TFC’s midfield and forwards are starting to click much more than injury plagued FCD. Altidore matches up well against the ever-changing back line that still isn’t used to each other. He’s going to eat them alive if they don’t get healthy this week.
Top Midfield Picks
Giovinco, Toronto FC, $11.2
The FC Dallas midfield is having a ton of issues now with injuries, style of play, and lack of depth. They have speed on the wings but not in the middle where Giovinco likes to hone his craft. Giovinco is fast, skilled, and relentless—if Michael Bradley (Toronto FC, $10.0) returns from international duty, they’re going to eat FCD’s midfield for dinner. If Bradley doesn’t return, he’ll still have a good game.
Lloyd Sam, New York Red Bulls, $8.8
Lloyd Sam has been phenomenal for a team that has been in amazing form lately. He’s connecting the majority of his passes, he’s creating scoring chances, and he’s been playing all-out every week. It’s not too far-fetched to say that he’s been the team MVP. Not only have NYRB been winning but they’ve been unstoppable at home. He also isn’t afraid to fight on defense if needed which picks up bonus points. He’s going to have a great week against a so-so team.
Stefan Ishizaki, Los Angeles Galaxy, $8.0
Ishizaki is rounding in to one of the best midfielders in the league. His play on the wing has been fast and consistent while his crosses have been almost as good as David Beckham’s were before he retired. He’s stepped up in a huge way for a midfield most pundits thought was going to lose quality after Landon Donovan’s retirement. LA Galaxy are lucky that he’s finally living up to his paycheck. LA plays at home against Sporting Kansas City, who still isn’t clicking like they have in the past, I think he’ll do well against their wings. He just will need his forwards to score.
Top Defensive Picks
Bobby Boswell, DC United, $9.1
DC United is at home against Houston Dynamo who are still trying to find their stride. He’s been part of a DC back line that has been impressive so far this year while also producing against some impressive teams. Houston has lacked an attack from their forwards which means he’ll pick up some defensive bonuses as long the Dynamo midfield doesn’t start clicking this game.
Damien Perinelle, New York Red Bulls, $6.7
Perinelle is putting up huge numbers for New York Red Bulls, a team everybody thought was going to flounder under their current ownership group and new coach. He’s been scoring, earning defensive bonuses, fighting for attacking bonuses, and picking up clean sheet points. NYRB are at home to San José this week who has struggled to find a consistent form—any team coming in to Red Bull Arena better figure out how to score because most teams aren’t.
Kofie Sarkodie, Houston Dynamo, $6.9
Houston Dynamo haven’t been scoring a ton of goals this season but they also haven’t been letting in very many. Sarkodie is one of the main reasons Houston isn’t at the bottom of the table. He’s solid, consistent, and can move the ball forward while stepping forward to stop any attack before it really gets started. DC United is a much stronger attacking team but Houston’s defense is better than their offense. Won’t be surprised at all if this game ends 0-0.
Goalkeeper Pick of the Week
Tyler Deric, Houston Dynamo, $5.1
Deric is standing on his head this season. His stops have made highlight reels every week and his passing is improving every game. If this game will be as low-scoring as I think it will be then he’ll pick up a defensive bonus or two on top of a likely clean sheet. He’s also a great player to keep around all year as he isn’t losing his starting spot any time soon.
