Monmouth vs Virginia Preview

Monmouth vs Virginia

An intriguing matchup tips off on Sunday afternoon, between a pair of schools who have shown they know how to win over the last few seasons.

Monmouth, who has won 55 games the last two years, is 2-1 on the season coming off of an 80-72 victory over Lehigh on Tuesday.

Virginia, a perennial Tournament team under Tony Bennett, is undefeated on the season (3-0) most recently pulling down a 76-67 victory over a pesky VCU squad.

The Cavaliers as usual are winning on the back of their defense. Virginia is yielding 54.7 points through three games – 12th in the nation. But it hasn’t been just their stellar defense…

Kyle Guy has been an offensive weapon after appearing in a bench role last season.¬†Guy averaged 7.5 points as a freshman, in 18.6 minutes per game. This season, he’s up near 30 minutes per contest and his scoring has reached 19.7 points, fueled by a career-high 29-point effort in Friday’s win over VCU.

“We got some good looks and then Kyle put on a heck of a shooting clinic with the shots he was making,” coach Tony Bennett said to reporters that night.

Monmouth, who lost MAAC Player of the Year Justin Robinson is led by a few key guys, specifically Micah Seaborn who has deep range and isn’t afraid to shoot from anywhere on the court. He is the team’s leading scorer at 17.3 points and has drained 6-of-13 3-pointers on the young season. Diago Quinn is another name to watch, he is a 6’9 forward who can hang down low and fight for rebounds against the Cavaliers.

Prediction

Monmouth won’t back down from this challenge, but they have an uphill battle to be able to crack this Cavaliers defense. Tony Bennett is 66-2 when his Virginia team holds opponents under 50 points–he won’t be able to do that against these Hawks, but this game won’t be played in the 80’s. With the line at -17.5 Virginia, I would lean Monmouth.
