As rumors swirl around about free agents and trades, I find myself interested in the Pacers and Monta Ellis talks. Probably largely due to the fact that I am a huge Mavericks fan. Apparently, Larry Bird is pushing hard to sign Ellis to a 3-year-deal for the price of around the lower $30 million range. First off, let me say that I love Ellis and I think he is worth every dollar of that. Secondly, as much as I’d hate to lose him, that would be a great move for the Pacers. My assumption is that his speed is what really put him on the radar for Vogel and company. Not to mention, he would be a huge upgrade for what they currently have with C.J. Miles. That isn’t a shot at Mr. Miles, it’s simply comparing the stats of the two (who both have exactly 10 years under their belt) and making a very easy observation. Ellis, over his career, has twice the points Miles does and 4x the assists.

I think that this move would put the Pacers right back up in the contender category. The speed and dependability of Monta, plus the over all superstar skill set of Paul George would be a defenders worst night mare. The main question remains as to who gets the boot over in Indy? Monta will certainly start and since no team wants to play without a PG my guess is there is only one option: reduce the big game and put one of the many SF’s that the Pacers use on the bench. Only time will tell.
