moon knight 1 2016

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Moon Knight has always been a character that can be summed up in one word: crazy. His multiple personalities is what always made him different from all the other superheroes and it is always explored whenever he gets a new series. But what makes this new volume of ‘Moon Knight 1’ already stand out is that he’s been institutionalized. Something that I’m honestly surprised hasn’t been explored yet (I mean come on he pretended to be an entire Avengers team how has he not been locked up?)

When we first see Marc Spector he’s been in an insane asylum with what seems to be the people he used to know. Both he and the reader discover that Marc isn’t even Moon Knight, he has been in this asylum since he was twelve and he writes about Moon Knight in his journal. However, all is not as it seems as when Marc puts on a make-shift mask and sees that New York has been taken over by the Egyptian God Seth, and the guards of the asylum resemble Seth’s appearance, but when the mask comes off everything is normal… or is it?

Let’s start talking about the art. Greg Smallwood was the only choice for a book like Moon Knight. His artistic style matches the grim surroundings and tone that’s displayed in the book, but it’s also bright and visually appealing. Art that can combine all of these elements is a rare case and I applaud Greg Smallwood for his talent.

The writing gives me a real Shutter Island vibe where you don’t know what to believe and keeps making you second guess yourself. It’s also more reader friendly so anyone can start with this issue along with some brief, but well executed action scenes. I have a feeling a continuing theme of this series will be all about what’s real or what’s not which I think that would be good seeing how well it was done in this first issue and this new series is off to a great and intriguing start.
