Morehead State vs Samford Preview and Prediction
Morehead State vs Samford Preview
Morehead State men’s basketball will head south this week to face former OVC foe Samford. The Eagles and Bulldogs will tip-off in Birmingham, Ala., at 7:30 p.m. ET Thursday.
Samford (8-2) is coming off a dominating victory over Alabama A&M and a thrilling OT-loss to fellow OVC member Belmont, 99-93 last week.
Morehead State (3-6) has lost four of their last five games, with their only victory coming against Div. III Ohio Chillicothe–yea I’ve never heard of that school either.
The Eagles have used the same starting five (A.J. Hicks, De’von Cooper, Jordan Walker, Lamontray Harris and Malek Green) in all nine games this season. Last season, that combo started two games with both being losses. In 2017-18, MSU used 10 different starting fives with the most used lineup only starting nine games together.
Jordan Walker leads the team in scoring (14.8 ppg) and has reached double-figures six times this season. He was slumping in their last three games averaging 4.6 points, but he seemed to right the ship in their loss to Marshall, scoring 21 points.
Covering Samford earlier in the season, I came away impressed with their head coach former NBA player Scott Padgett who has quickly transformed the Bulldogs’ basketball team into a Southern Conference championship competitor and rapidly revamped Samford’s recruiting efforts.
For the Bulldogs to find success, it typically revolves around junior guard Josh Sharkey. Through the first nine games of the season, Sharkey leads the team in assists (6.6 apg.), and ranks second in scoring (14.7 ppg.) and fourth in rebounding (3.3 rpg.). Sharkey has scored in double figures in seven of the team’s nine games, and he has dished out at least five assists in eight of those contests.
Sharkey leads the offense as the point guard, but their big man head coach has a true big man in senior Ruben Guerrero. So far this season, Guerrero lead the team in scoring and rebounding, averaging 14.8 points and 8.2 rebounds per game. He has scored in double figures in eight of the team’s first nine games.
LINE: -8.5 Samford
Samford at 8-2, is off to their best start since the 1996-97 season and has looked impressive even in their losses.
Morehead State looked overmatched against Marshall in their last game and I would say this Samford team would run the floor with the Thundering Herd.
The Bulldogs are 9-0 ATS in their last nine games.
I hate to use the word ‘lock’ but I will say I am personally betting Samford to win and cover the points tonight.
