I can’t believe I’m doing this.

As a lifelong Washington Redskins fan this might cause me to lose some standing among my “Hail To The Redskins” (HTTR) followers but Jason Witten is an all-time Dallas Cowboys player and a first ballot Hall Of Fame player.

I know HTTR’s it’s blasphemy. The Dallas Cowboys are our nemesis. A compilation of the luckiest, most infuriating opponents ever. Remember the 1974 Thanksgiving Day game when Staubach was replaced by Clint Longley?:

No? How about in 1989 when the Cowboys were 1-15 and their only win was against, you guessed it, Washington.

Even last year with all of Dallas’ struggles, in an important game for the Skins, it went like this:

After all this… stuff, why am I willing to put such praise on Jason Witten? Let’s start with the latter from my previous statement. Why is he a Hall Of Fame first ballot player?

Jason Witten has the most receptions in a season by a tight end – 110 (2012)

He has the second most receptions and receiving yards by a tight end – 1,152 (4th all time) 12,488

He holds the record for most consecutive games played and games started by a tight end.

Those are just a few of his amazing stats and what makes him a first ballot hall of famer.

Now to the former. What makes him an all time Dallas Cowboy?

Sure he was awarded the Walter Payton Man Of The Year Award but for me it’s always been about what you are in a moment of crisis. Who you are when you make plans to visits a hospital full of sick kids (though that’s great and if you can volunteer I absolutely recommend you do) with expectations to be kind and funny and sweet doesn’t reveal who you are. Nope, for me this will always stick out and say the most about Jason Witten:

In the middle of his interview, a time to for him, he bolts from the interview (even says excuse me) to go and be by the side of  a melting down Dez Bryant and to make sure the locker room doesn’t become a melee. That’s leadership. That’s class.

So off he goes into the Monday Night Football booth and this old Skins fan wishes him all the best and I’ll even tune in and watch.

Well, until he starts reminiscing about Cowboys-Redskins games.
