My Top Ten Summer Movies 2017
This summer saw a multitude of movies being released that spanned over many genres. We got Sci-Fi/ Fantasy with movies like Valerian. Action movies, like Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales. Silly comedies like Baywatch. And even romantic movies like Everything, Everything. Not all of them lived up to our expectations (The Mummy) and some even exceeded them. These are my favorite movies of summer 2017.
10. Alien: Covenant
While I’m aware that many people hated the newest edition to the Alien franchise, but I found it all highly entertaining. From James Franco’s two second role to the two Michael Fassbenders. It was exciting from beginning to end. A sequel to Prometheus a crew finds themselves on the planet that David (Michael Fassbender) and Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) had landed on 11 years earlier. Shaw is now dead and David has been experimenting with face huggers and the black liquid. After everything seems to be resolved, we of course know that it can’t actually be considering the all of the other movies that are sequels. The twist in the end is in my opinion the perfect bow that tied this insane movie together.
9. War for The Planet of the Apes
Another movie that is a prequel to a much older movie. It is the installment of the prequel trilogy of Planet of the Apes. The movie follows the consequences of Koba’s actions from Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. Caesar has gone into hiding, but is found because of a traitor. His older son and wife are murdered and now Cesar is out for revenge. Along the way he finds a little girl who can’t speak just like the humans in the 1968 film. Woody Harrelson as the villain is perfect choice and I even found myself sympathizing with him at some point. The motion capture in the film is of course incredible and I think it’s some of Andy Serkis’s best work. It’s a shame that if the franchise does continue he will no longer be apart of it.
8. Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie
Okay this is the best animated movie that came out this summer. I don’t know whether it’s nostalgia or the fact that the movie was so cleverly done, but I truly loved this movie. It was everything that a Captain Underpants movie should be; hilarious, silly, and full of potty jokes. The characters were perfectly cast, especially Kevin Hart as George and Ed Helms as the title character/ awful Principle Krupp. The film even had the iconic flip o rama which literally almost brought me to tears because of how happy it made me. Captain Underpants managed to do exactly what it set out to do which I think was to remind people my age how much we loved this story and how we should never stifle our creativity no matter who tells us to.
7. The Big Sick
I’m still slightly bitter that this didn’t get a wider release. It’s one of best quirky romantic comedies I’ve seen in some time and it had me in tears by the end of it. The fact that it’s based on real life events makes the movie even more beautiful. It’s also such a relatable movie because at some point in our lives we’ve all realized that we can’t be the person that our parents want us to be and we can either decide to not care or pretend to be someone we’re not. I love that Kumail’s decision is the latter. His parents want him to be a perfect Pakistani son and he wants to be a comedian and marry a girl that he actually loves. Seeing the relationship form between Kumail and Emily’s parents while she’s in a coma is so incredibly special. Although the end is predictable it’s still sweet and amazing way to end the film.
6. Atomic Blonde
You called for a hard-core female who can disarm someone in under 10 seconds? Well Charlize Theron answered. This movie is insane! The action sequences are incredible and the plot is well thought out. It all centers around MI6 agent Lorraine’s time in Berlin during the Cold War while she tries to find a list of double agents without getting killed. That proves difficult when everyone else wants that list and willing to kill her and anyone she’s associated with to get that list. James McAvoy is the perfect sidekick type character with his British accent and all around sketchy nature. Theron is the absolute perfect leading lady who easily manages to be beautiful and deadly all at the same time.
5. Girl’s Trip
I’ve already expressed how much I absolutely adore this movie in a previous article, and there’s really not much more I can add. It’s a hilarious movie about friendship between strong black women who have different personalities and circumstances. It’s the perfect girl’s night out movie!
4. Wonder Woman
There is no summer 2017 movie list without Wonder Woman. DC finally got it right with this one. After years of claims that a superhero movie with a woman as the lead wouldn’t do well at the box office Wonder Woman shut that down during it’s opening weekend. It broke records left and right and gave us hope for the DC Extended Universe. Wonder Woman is the hero we’ve been waiting for; fierce, powerful, with a heart full of gold. No Man’s Land is by far one of the best scenes in a movie this year. Gal Gadot is a steps up to the role as does her costar Chris Pine who plays Steve Trevor. Their chemistry is also one of the reasons this movie works so well and has us all wiping our eyes by the end of the movie.
3. Spider-Man: Homecoming
Spider-Man is back and better than ever! This reboot is absolute perfection! Tom Holland is not only the perfect Peter Parker but he’s also the perfect Spider-Man which in my opinion has been what’s off with the franchise. We had Tobey Maguire who was the perfect Peter Parker, and then there was Andrew Garfield who was the perfect Spider-Man. Tom Holland is the best of both worlds. After seeing him in Civil War I was excited to see what he would do with his own movie and he was beyond what I expected. Robert Downey Jr. is in the movie the perfect amount and Michael Keaton is a surprisingly great villain. I am insanely excited to see Infinity War and how Spider-Man fares against Thanos.
2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
Yet another Marvel movie that blew me away. Vol. 2 is even better than the first one had me sobbing even more than “We are Groot”. Peter, Gamora, Rocket, Drax, and Groot are back at it again and not much has changed. They are still the most dysfunctional team, but the only ones who can save the galaxy. James Gunn did everything right once again. There was a killer soundtrack led by “Come a Little Bit Closer“, humor throughout the whole movie and Groot is still the absolute best character and even more so in baby form. Kurt Russell as Ego (such an appropriate character name) the planet turned man for this depiction is incredible. You can tell there is something super off about him, but I don’t think anyone could guess what his real plans are. Yondu steals the movie with his magic arrow and his surprising heart that makes watching him leave the series that much harder. The cameo made by Sylvester Stallone is in a word: iconic. And the rumors that he will be appearing more in the franchise has me even more eager to see what Vol. 3 has to offer us.
1. Baby Driver
I will be the first to admit I thought this movie was going to be bad. The title alone was enough to throw me off and didn’t see the charm that everyone else saw in Ansel Elgort. I’ve never been more thrilled to be proven so wrong! The first three minutes had me hooked. I couldn’t think of anyone who is better fit to play the role of Baby than Elgort. He is adorable and charming and the movie would be absolutely nothing without him. Kevin Spacey is exceptional as usual and his character is not only hilarious, but there’s more to him than we originally see. Jaime Foxx is terrifying, and Jon Hamm truly shines in this film. This is another movie on my list that has an amazing soundtrack including songs such as “Debra”, “Deborah”, “Easy”, and “Tequila”. This may very well be my favorite Edgar Wright film! There wasn’t a single thing I disliked about the movie. The car chases were exhilarating, the relationship between Ansel Elgort and Lily Collins was believable, and the movie references were spot on and amusing. Baby Driver in my opinion is the movie of the summer!
So there’s my top ten favorite movies. Are there any you think I missed or that you wouldn’t have had on your list? Let me know in the comments!
