NBA Playoff Predictions

The NBA Playoffs are here and our staff writers will be making their predictions throughout the entire postseason. In this piece we start with the Eastern Conference first round matchups and who will advance into Round 2.

NBA Playoff Predictions

1. Boston Celtics vs 8. Chicago Bulls

Brandon Reid: The home team has won every game in this season series. Boston has the home court advantage, coaching advantage, and post play advantage. This will be a very close series for a 1 VS 8 matchup.

Prediction: Boston in 7

Dan Schalk: I picked the Celtics at the beginning of the year, so no way they will lose this first round matchup. My fellow writers are predicting a close series, but not me…

Prediction: Boston in 4

Malachi David: The series is split between them this season, but it is hard to get against the Celtics over a 7-game span.

Prediction: Boston in 6

Michael Gomez: I’m picking the Celtics because the Bulls play ugly basketball and I don’t want fans to have to suffer through multiple playoff series. This matchup is a lot closer than the respective standings and it can go either way.

Prediction: Boston in 7

Orlando Torres: The road to the Finals is not going to be easy for the Celtics. They get a Bulls team who really isn’t an 8th seed if you think about it, they are tough defensively, Jimmy Butler is one of the best players in the league and will be a nightmare for Boston to slowdown, and they have championship experience with Wade and Rondo. Ultimately, Boston has the better starting line up, younger and deeper bench. It is worth noting that Isiah Thomas’ points, rebounds and assists were the lowest vs the Bulls all season compared to other teams.

Prediction: Boston in 7

2. Cleveland Cavaliers vs 7. Indiana Pacers

Brandon Reid: There has been some high scoring games in this season series. But this is the playoffs. Cleveland is going to be on a mission to win the championship and prove losing the #1 seed means nothing. Sweep.

Prediction: Cavaliers in 4

Dan Schalk: The Cavs are struggling, so I’ll give the Pacers a game maybe two. That’s it.

Prediction: Cavaliers in 5

Malachi David: The Cavaliers have been in a rut since the all-star break. They look more beatable than ever. However, playoff LeBron is a whole different player.

Prediction: Cavaliers in 5

Michael Gomez: This is an interesting match up, especially with Lance Stephenson back on the roster. LeBron will have his hands full being defended by Stephenson and George. Indiana also has some decent match ups but Cleveland is too talented to lose here. A good 7 game series is in the works here.

Prediction: Cavaliers in 7

Orlando Torres: This is the perfect match up for the Cavs who have been struggling in March and towards the end of the season. They get a Pacers team with Paul George and really nobody else who’s going to step up and push LeBron around when push comes to shove. What the Pacers do have is Lance Stephenson, who besides blowing in Lebron’s ear still won’t be enough to stop the Cavs. Not much to break down here, George is a true threat, but doesn’t have the help.

Prediction: Cavs in 4

3. Toronto Raptors vs 6. Milwaukee Bucks

Brandon Reid: The addition of Serge Ibaka will eventually prove to be huge in the playoffs. Milwaukee isn’t ready for this challenge. Antetokounmpo will not be able to carry them through a playoff series. The Bucks need to add some pieces in the off-season if they want to make that next level jump.

Prediction: Toronto in 5

Dan Schalk: I like the Bucks roster, but they are a year away from competing in the postseason.

Prediction: Toronto in 6

Malachi David: Both of these teams may have underachieved this year, which should create a great matchup as each tries to prove themselves.

Prediction: Toronto in 6

Michael Gomez: The Raptors made huge pick ups mid-season and are really hitting their stride, particularly on the defensive end. The Raptors are also coming in with a stacked roster, they have depth at every position, something the Bucks severely lack.

Prediction: Toronto in 6

Orlando Torres: Since acquiring Serge Ibaka, the Raptors have been terrorizing teams defensively, and have been top 10 in the league when it comes to scoring, Milwaukee on the other hand have one of the leagues hottest and promising players of the future in Giannis Antetokounmpo, they also have Greg Monroe, and championship experience of Matthew Delladova, but Delly was also sharing the court with LeBron and Kyrie.

Prediction: Toronto in 4

4. Washington Wizards vs 5. Atlanta Hawks

Brandon Reid: John Wall and Bradley Beal will control this series. Atlanta has no answer for this backcourt duo. Washington will have the lead for over 90% in this series. Bad matchup for Atlanta.

Prediction: Washington in 5

Dan Schalk: I do not pick Dwight Howard to win playoff series.

Prediction: Washington in 5

Malachi David: The Wizards have always been on the brink of being an East contender and a first round win would help. The Hawks on the other hand have been on point recently.

Prediction: Hawks in 7

Michael Gomez: Atlanta has no answer for John Wall. Once Optimus Dime gets started he will run circles around the Atlanta defense. The Wizards have a chip on their shoulder and want to go make a statement with a 5 game series.

Prediction: Washington in 5

Orlando Torres: Scott Brooks is coaching one of the leagues highest ranked scoring teams with John Wall and Bradley Beal finally both being healthy and clicking. Arguably, no other team has been hotter than the Wizards in the second half of the season. Atlanta has ranked as high as a top 5 defensive team with Dwight Howard and Kent Bazemore, but I think it comes to the point guards in this match up.

Prediction: Washington in 6
