NBA Playoff Predictions

The NBA Playoffs are here and our staff writers will be making their predictions throughout the entire postseason. In this piece we predict the Western Conference first round matchups and who will advance into Round 2.

NBA Playoff Predictions

1. Golden State Warriors vs 8. Portland Trailblazers

Brandon Reid: Zero chance for a Portland win in this series. Moving on.

Prediction: Warriors in 4

Dan Schalk: Lillard and McCollum will steal at least one, maybe two games. But that’s it.

Prediction: Warriors in 6

Malachi David: The all around talent of Golden State is going to be too much for Portland. They will maybe steal one game.

Prediction: Warriors in 5

Michael Gomez: Golden State is just too stacked and too good to fall to the Trailblazers. Damian Lillard will try as hard as he can but I don’t see this series going past 5 games.

Prediction: Warriors in 5

Orlando Torres: It was just last season when Curry was out with a knee injury when the Trailblazers gave Golden State a scare that made the Warriors bring Steph back earlier than expected. This time around even if Curry were to go down Kevin Durant is there and he is healthy! Damian Lillard and C.J. McCollum won’t have a problem scoring if it turns into a shoot out, but the Warriors are just too much for them.

Prediction: Warriors in 4

2. San Antonio Spurs vs 7. Memphis Grizzlies

Brandon Reid: This hurts to say, but Memphis isn’t playing well right now. Tony Allen is dealing with a calf issue and is out until further notice. While the Spurs do not scare me, Memphis must play perfect to beat them. LaMarcus Aldridge has been a thorn in the Grizzlies side since his Portland days. He is the key to this series.

Prediction: Spurs in 6

Dan Schalk: If the Grizz were fully healthy I would say they could win the series in six games. But as Brandon alluded to, they aren’t clicking right now and their best defender could miss games.

Prediction: Spurs in 7

Malachi David: If there is a chance for a big upset, this is it. These teams split the series this year. I don’t think Memphis will win, but they take the Spurs to six games.

Prediction: Spurs in 6

Michael Gomez: The Grizzlies just have a way of making opposing teams work for everything. I don’t have faith in the San Antonio front court, especially against the Grizzlies. I know this pick sounds crazy but I think Memphis grinds out a 7 game series.

Prediction: Grizzlies in 7

Orlando Torres: The first time in nearly 20 years the Spurs head into the post season without Tim Duncan, and throughout his career Duncan has been a nightmare for the Grizzlies, and the proof is there. This season the Grizzlies have pushed the Spurs to the limit on all four regular season meetings, and this round one series could be a scare for Spurs fans if the Spurs don’t adjust, but Pop is a master at that.

Prediction: Spurs in 5

3. Houston Rockets vs 6. Oklahoma City Thunder

Brandon Reid: Russell Westbrook will show James Harden what an MVP looks like. What clutch looks like. Unfortunately for Russ, the only guy on his team with playoff experience is Steven Adams. I still contend the Rockets are not built for the playoffs, but they will squeak out this series.

Prediction: Rockets in 7

Dan Schalk: I apologize for the other writers who actually picked the Thunder to win. It won’t happen. Harden is the better player on a better team with a better coach. Recipe to advance.

Prediction: Rockets in 5

Malachi David: This will be a matchup that could have more intensity and passion than the Finals themselves. You have the top two MVP candidates facing off to prove he can be their teams hero. I’m taking the less traveled road here.

Prediction: Thunder in 7

Michael Gomez: The battle of the league’s top MVP candidates. Houston will be launching triples all day, but with the added physicality of the playoffs idk if their team can last. No one on the Rockets will be able to counter the Thunder’s frontcourt of Adams, Kanter and Gibson. OKC takes it in 6.

Prediction: Thunder in 6

Orlando Torres: Look both guys have had an incredible season, and the argument is literally never-ending on who you think should get the MVP, but we all know Westbrook can hold his own and will probably set an all-time playoff record by scoring 40-50 a night in this series to carry his team, unfortunately his team won’t be able to reflect what Westbrook will provide. Give me Harden’s squad easily over the Thunder.

Prediction: Houston in 5

4. LA Clippers vs 5. Utah Jazz

Brandon Reid: This is a classic case of one team clearly being the better team, but the other team is good enough to win one home game. The Clippers are the real #3 seed in the West. The real Western Conference Finals will be a 2nd Round series between Golden State and Los Angeles.

Prediction: Clippers in 5

Dan Schalk: The Clippers are finally getting healthy and while I want the Jazz to win, they need this postseason series to build on for next season.

Prediction: Clippers in 6

Malachi David: This is a case where defense does not win championships. The Jazz are one of the best defensively, but they don’t have the offense to go shot for shot with the Clippers.

Prediction: Clippers in 5

Michael Gomez: The Clippers always fall apart in the playoffs, and this will be no different. The Utah Jazz are a defensive monster, and have good depth at all positions. I see Utah clinching this in 6 games.

Prediction: Jazz in 6

Orlando Torres: This is going to be one of the most intriguing series to me. The Clippers are fully healthy at the right time with Chris Paul, Blake Griffin, mix in DeAndre Jordan and that deep bench they have and this sounds like it’s over right? Wrong. This seems like a trap series for the Clippers. Gordon Hayward has quietly went from a pretty good player to an all-star player this season. Joe Johnson and Boris Diaw have been clicking, and I think if this goes to a game 7 the Clippers we’ll eventually fold.

Prediction: Utah in 7
