The New England Patriots closed the first round on Thursday by selecting defensive tackle Malcom Brown, 32nd overall. In the second round the team opted for defensive back Jordan Richards out of Stanford University. Richards stands 5’11” and weighs 211 pounds, he was team captain in college and was an integral part of leading the team’s defensive unit.

He is a limited safety when it comes to coverage but can offer ample support in defending the run game. This seems a bit of a reach for the Patriots, as he was slotted to go later on in most mock drafts I have seen. Richards is a highly intelligent player, he can make up for his lacking athletic ability through the use of his high football IQ. Seems like the stereotypical Patriots pick.

With the first of the team’s third round draft choices, the Patriots made a trade with Cleveland. New England sent third and seventh round selections to the Browns in exchange for fourth, fifth and sixth rounders (typical Patriots way, trading for multiple pics). With their remaining third round draft choice the Patriots selected defensive end Geneo Grissom, from Oklahoma. Grissom is an extremely versatile player at 6’3” and 262 pounds he has a well-developed frame and a significant upside denoted by his physical talent level. Geneo can line up at a variety of positions in New England’s versatile defensive scheme. Coach Bill Belichick even acknowledged him as a superior tight end talent. He is a raw player at the moment but should develop into a contributor sooner rather than later for the Patriots.

Overall Draft Grade: B+

Landin Murphy

Landin “Shredder” Murphy has been athletic since early age, quickly developing a propensity for both baseball and swimming. One of Landin’s fondest memories was his youth baseball team narrowly missing out on the opportunity to play in the Little League World Series Final. Unfortunately, during high school Landin was forced to forget his originally preferred sports as a freak basketball injury nearly ended his life. All prospects for Division I sports scholarships evaporated. Despite this set back, Landin focused his energies in new modes, becoming an All-State musician, avid sports journalist and by"Bodybuilding" to stimulate and heal his body. In an effort to assist others, Landin is currently pursuing Pre-Medical, Dosimetry and Sports Medicine degrees.
