New ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Trailer – The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
Yesterday Sony and Marvel Studios put out a six second teaser to hype the brand new Spider-Man Homecoming trailer. Today said trailer dropped and while it was quite impressive there are many parts of the trailer that are bad and also quite ugly. The trailer opens with Peter Parker (Tom Holland) suiting up for action with his Tony Stark made Spider-Man suit. The suit has a form fitting technology that Peter activates when pressing the spider symbol in the middle of his chest. We then see Parker having fun as you would expect, swinging around the city, saying “Hi” to random citizens, and even making a splash – pun intended – at a local pool party. Lets discuss what was good, bad, and even the ugly of this trailer which you can view below.
The Good – I love the tone of the trailer for starters. This movie looks to have a serious tone with some underlying fun like most Spider-Man movies but this one is a tad darker I feel. Its almost comparable to the last 15-20 minutes of Amazing Spider-Man 2 with Green Goblin and the death of Gwen Stacy. I like that this trailer establishes more of the plot details and the motive behind Michael Keaton’s Vulture. I truly believe that Keaton will be the shining moment of this film and this his character will be one long remembered. I also think Tom Holland is a terrific Peter Parker/Spider-Man. The trailer had many classic Spider-Man scenes with him using his wit and humor while taking down low level thugs. He looks up to Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) and wants his approval. You can tell he looks at Stark as a father figure and Stark even mentors him and scolds him like a father. I also enjoyed the lighter and fun moments with Parker and his school chum discussing Parker being Spider-Man, even asking if he could “summon an army of spiders”. He even tries the suit on which is quite hilarious as well. I am really liking the new suit and I even like the home made suit he has to use later in the movie.
The Bad – The bad of this trailer is the fact that we once again have a Spider-Man trying to fit in, struggling with who he is, and getting the old you don’t have to carry the weight of the world on your shoulders. The same theme and message from every other Spider-Man film we have seen. I wish that he was a more established hero and we just kind of catch up with him after the events of Captain America: Civil War. Also this trailer focuses quite a bit on Tony Stark/Iron Man. Stark has taken the place of Uncle Ben except we know he wont die. He is the one giving the tough love speeches to Parker, even scolding him for using the suit recklessly and taking the suit from him. Parker wanting so much to be like Stark but getting rejected cause Stark wants him to be better. Vulture’s motives even seem Stark driven and it seems he has some vendetta against rich guys like Stark who care about nothing. We see Stark having to bail Spider-Man out of situation that could have or might cost human lives. I get that Iron Man is the Batman of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but does this movie really need to be Iron Man 4 co-starring Spider-Man? I love Iron Man and this will get the film more views and more $$$ but it isn’t necessary. Also we they are making sure the Avengers tower and logo are front and center on posters and in the trailer. I get Spider-Man wants to be an Avenger but we do not need to see or hear about in every marketing shot? Also the trailer does reveal quite a bit which some might consider spoiler territory. We do get to see more of Shocker but they have not really shown the other 3-4 villains this film plans to have.
The Ugly – This shot right here is the only UGLY of the trailer! Why in the world would you show that awful Captain America outfit from Avengers?! Of all his suits and the decided to use this one. They went right into the dumpster to create this commercial showcasing Captain America’s fitness challenge. Also isn’t Captain America a fugitive from the law? So why are they showing commercials of him to kids? Guess continuity isn’t that big of a deal when trying to shoe horn the Avengers into a SPIDER-MAN movie!
