NFL 2015 Fantasy Football Rookie MVP Prediction

Out of all the players selected in the NFL Draft this year, a few stand out from the crowd. With the perfect combination of existing team conditions, and proper skill set, these players are primed for explosions of professional football success. Just entering the league, Melvin Gordon is a great player to keep an eye on. Here’s why he should be the NFL’s preseason favorite to win Offensive Rookie of the Year.

Gordon has frequently drawn comparisons to Jamaal Charles. He wore the same number as Charles in college, and even has dreadlocks that look fantastically similar. Just like Charles, Gordon relies heavily on speed to impact the game. He is not only a threat to break off long runs but to catch passes as well. (That’s good news considering Chargers running backs caught 83 passes last season.) Just like Charles, Gordon will be a running back that can stay on the field for all times of possession. He won’t simply be relegated to first or second downs, like an increasing number of running backs throughout the league. Gordon is a well-rounded running back with great acceleration and balance. In the pre-draft process, Gordon’s big question mark was his pass-catching (only 22 receptions in his career) but he answered those at his pro-day where his hands were well above-average.

The Chargers traded up to select Melvin and there is reason for it. With Philip Rivers they have an elite quarterback, and now they have a great running threat to compliment him (Ryan Mathews could not stay healthy his entire career). Gordon will likely spend a significant amount of time lining up in shotgun formation (something Wisconsin did not do a lot), and with a spread out passing attack, he will be able to make the most of his assets in the speed department. Open space means more area to run and the opportunity to make people miss tackles. Melvin Gordon couldn’t have landed in a more perfect position. He’s just what the Chargers have been looking for and fantasy owners should not hesitate to draft him.
