Victor Ochi-DE-Stony Brook
Size: 6’1 246lbs

Victor Ochi NFL Draft Sleeper
(Samantha Baker/AP)

Strengths:

  • Versatile, 3-4 OLB, 4-3 DE
  • High motor
  • Tackling machine
  • Long arms
  • Speed off the edge

Analysis: I fell in love with Victor Ochi as a legitimate draft prospect at the East/West Shrine game where he completely dominated the competition. That made me study his game tape, and I fell in love even more. If there is one sleeper who will be drafted in the later rounds and have a chance at a Pro Bowl career, it is Ochi. He can play standing up or with his hand in the dirt, constricting running lanes looking to dive down the line of scrimmage to make tackles. His high motor is evident on every play and he was able to decimate FCS offensive tackles with punch, rip and tug moves that sends them to the ground. His 34 inch arms are extremely long for his frame, making him difficult to get sucked into offensive lineman’s blocks. He holds Stony Brook’s records in sacks and tackles for loss.

Weaknesses:

  • Small size
  • Level of competition in college
  • Stiff in space
  • Lacks coverage skills

Analysis: Victor Ochi is smaller than desired for an edge defender, and if he gets drafted in a 3-4 scheme he could have trouble adapting at first to being placed in coverage. Somewhat stiff in space. Playing at Stony Brook he played lower level competition, so his stats might not translate to the NFL. Why I believe it will is due to his dominance at the Shrine Game and Senior Bowl, playing with and against premier talent. Victor Ochi is a tireless worker who will do anything to succeed in the game he loves to play.

Draft Projection: 4-6th Round

NFL Comparison: Dwight Freeney
