Size: 5’10 194lbs

Sterling Shepard
According to MFST’s Dan Schalk, Sterling Shepard is the most complete wide receiver in this year’s draft. (Mark D. Smith-USA TODAY Sports)

Strengths:

  • Route running
  • Fantastic hands
  • Versatile
  • Not afraid to go over the middle
  • Work ethic
  • Great jumper/leaper
  • Quick

Analysis: It is no secret I am a huge Sterling Shepard fan. In fact, I have Shepard now ranked as my No.1 WR in this year’s draft class. He is the most polished receiver and will be able to step in day one and make an impact in any NFL offense. Despite his slight frame, Shepard’s toughness, strong hands, and quick cuts make him the sort of in-space player NFL offensive coordinators want on their team. These same attributes are required if you are a WR who can succeed working over the middle on an NFL field. He plays with consistent play speed in-and-out of his breaks and can hit the gas out of his breaks to create instant separation for anticipatory throws. Shepard had just eight drops with 253 catches and is able to adjust to high, low or behind him for difficult catches. Plain and simple the guy competes and will take any task thrown at him. He is a willing blocker and has sprung running back’s for big runs due to his success in that area. His father Derrick played in the NFL, most notably with the Dallas Cowboys.

Weaknesses:

  • Play strength
  • ‘Dances’ too much with ball in his hands
  • Does not have blazing speed

Analysis: Sterling Shepard may be one of the toughest receivers in the draft, but his play strength and actual size leaves a lot to be desired. This ultimately, will affect his draft stock. He is a first round talent, but due to that he will fall into the second round. He can be redirected in his routes and will get trapped against the sideline at times. More quick than fast and reliant upon smart routes to get over the top against true speed.

NFL Comparison: Antonio Brown

Draft Projection: 2nd round (1st round talent)
