NFL Holdouts: Selfish or Unselfish?
Player holdouts have been a big issue in the NFL. Either they want their current team to offer them a max contract or they just are not happy with their team. Whichever reason it is, it can have an impact on the team and the player.
We all know Adrian Peterson is not happy with the Vikings. He has voiced his opinions about the franchise several times. However, he still managed to show up to OTAs and mandatory minicamp. In addition to Peterson, several other players are unhappy with their current team, but still showed up to minicamp.
Recently, Falcons receiver Julio Jones spoke out against holding out. Jones said to a reporter at the Falcons minicamp, “I want to win. If I’m not here, I’m not here for my teammates, I’m being selfish.” Jones, who is in his final year of his contract, is set to receive $10,176,000.
Then, there are those players who are holding out of mandatory minicamp because they are seeking a max contract. Some big name players doing so are Justin Houston, Demaryius Thomas, and Dez Bryant. These three players all had a franchise tag placed on them, and the main reason they all are sitting out. All three are key pieces to their organizations. Many football personnel are confident that they are going to get contract extensions, to me, it is somewhat crazy that the players believe that their respective teams are not going to pay them. Demaryius is very important in the Peyton Manning-led Broncos’ offense. Just like Dez Bryant is an integral piece in the Cowboys offense. Justin Houston is one of the main reasons why the Chiefs defense is successful, and has put up JJ Watt-type numbers every year he has been in the league.
I think it is crazy for these specific individuals to be holding out when it is almost a guarantee that they are going to be paid. I respect those who attend minicamp, because they show they care and respect their teammates, organization and winning.
