The NFL season is upon us and if you’re like me then you’re getting your fantasy team(s) line-ups together, your Pick Em League selections in, and dusting off that favorite team memorabilia for Week 1.

The start of the season also brings out the point spread addicts and odds crazed individuals like myself who love to play the game within the game. Whether your Pick Em League uses point spreads, or if you are a novice bettor, or if you follow the odds for fun, we have you covered.

Each week this season I will look at the schedule and pick a handful of games that catch my eye. As I do every year, I like to start off very slowly because it usually takes a game or two (or three or four) for teams to show who they are now, as oppose to who they were in the previous season.

Pittsburgh @ New England (-7)

The returning Super Bowl Champs open the season up as favorites vs. the Steelers. With Tom Brady’s 4-game suspension lifted, the Patriots look to get Deflategate behind them and start their title defense off on a good foot.  Pittsburgh, who is historically known for having good defenses, hasn’t won a playoff game since 2010 and their defense has steadily declined since. Out is Defensive Guru Dick LeBeau, Troy Polamalu, and Brett Keisel- from the team that ranked 27th vs the pass last season.

Although the Patriots are dealing with some injury issues in their offensive line and wide receiver core, Brady should have enough weapons to win this game by at least a score.

Patriots 27  Pittsburgh 17

Kansas City (+1) @ Houston

This game is tough to call, as we have two teams that look to have above average defenses this season but question marks on offense. For the Chiefs, their offensive line is going to be the most important thing for them because if that line can’t give Alex Smith the necessary time, it will be a long day.

The Chiefs finished 9-7 last season and they really did let a few games get away from them and this year they are focused on not letting that happen again. They were 4-0 in the preseason. Last time that happened, they won the Super Bowl.  I think they will start the season off right and get one in the win column.

Chiefs 24  Texans 16

Minnesota @ San Francisco (+2.5)

Sometimes point spreads can really leave you scratching your head. The 49’ers were favorites (by 4.5 points) up until and around the time Aldon Smith got suspended. Couple that with Minnesota Vikings fans who are happy to see Adrian Peterson back on the field and you can understand the shift in points. But an almost 7 point swing is pretty drastic. There was so much turnover on the 49’ers coaching staff and roster that people expect this team to struggle all year but I believe that their defense will still be a top 15 (I know that’s not saying much) defense and that alone will put them in a place to compete every week. I think they come out and control this game on that side of the ball.

49’ers 23  Vikings 17
