Nick Chubb Draft Profile

Nick Chubb draft profile

Strengths:

  • Strong base
  • One-cut ability
  • Footwork
  • Starting to get some acceleration/quickness back after injuries
  • Ball security
  • Patient runner

Analysis: Nick Chubb battled the odds coming back from a gruesome knee injury and is now close to hearing his name called at the NFL Draft. His stock is actually climbing leading up to draft day and there are reasons behind it. Chubb is beginning to show the explosion and acceleration we saw from him pre-injury. In 2016, he looked like a shell of himself, but bounced back with a solid 2017 campaign. He possesses a low center of gravity and strong base giving him natural balance to help stack yardage after contact. He has that one-cut ability scouts look for. Shows proper level of discipline to keep runs between the tackles when called for rather than trying to bounce everything outside. Has footwork and feel to slalom through interior traffic and squeeze out hidden creases near goal line. Patient approach and runs with very little wasted motion. Ball security is a plus.

Weaknesses:

  • Durability
  • Explosion/sharpness not the same after multiple knee injuries
  • Vision
  • Hesitance reading blocks
  • Not a receiving back
  • Struggles against defensive line penetration early

Analysis: Despite his efforts, Nick Chubb is not the same running back he was before his knee injury. His explosion and sharpness still not quite where it was before leg injury in 2015. Needs to make early cuts to avoid tacklers. Tends to get bogged down when forced by penetration to make off-schedule moves early in the run. Vision is just okay. Shows occasional hesitance in reading block development. His late wiggle is below average. Doesn’t possess run-away speed. Was blatantly disregarded in the receiving game at Georgia.
