Oakland vs Cleveland State Preview

The Oakland Golden Grizzlies (4-9) head to Ohio to take on the Cleveland State Vikings (5-8) in what is the Horizon League opener for both squads.

The Vikings ended non-conference play with an 82-60 win over Niagara, their third straight home win.

Oakland’s non-conference slate has not been so kind. They are losers of four straight, but those games were a gauntlet for the team. Their latest loss was against 10th-ranked Michigan State, and before that they faced Georgia, CAA favorite Northeastern and Hartford. Not an easy stretch for any team.

All-time series

Oakland swept the regular-season series last season, but CSU returned the favor, edging past OU in the Horizon League semifinals with a 44-43 victory as Tyree Appleby hit a go-ahead shot with 32 seconds left.

This will be the 15th meeting between the two schools.

Two-headed monster for both clubs

Both of these Horizon League teams are paced by two players on each squad.

Oakland:

Xavier Hill-Mais: 22.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, 2 assists

The 6’7 junior forward is the Grizzlies best player and is the focal point of their offense. They look to get him the ball seemingly every possession and let him go to work. His 250-pound frame is filled with muscle and he can ‘big-boy’ a lot of the frontcourt players in the Horizon League.

Jaevin Cumberland: 16.0 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists

Cumberland, also a junior, is a sharpshooter who is connecting on 45 percent of his three-point attempts. If he gets hot, look out.

Cleveland State:

Tyree Appleby: 16.8 points, 3.9 rebounds, 5.3 assists

Appleby looks like he is 12-years-old but make no mistake this guy can ball. He leads the Vikings in points and assists and despite only being a sophomore, he is a leader on this team.

Stefan Kenic: 11.9 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists

Standing at 6’9 the Serbian is only a sophomore and still has a lot to learn, but he shows signs of being a great player. Consistency is key.
