The Tennessee Titans had a miserable 2014 season, the first under head coach Ken Wisenhunt. As the Titans compiled a 2-14 record, they lacked playmakers in all three phases: offense, defense, and special teams. Top 2014 draft picks Taylor Lewan and Bishop Sankey failed to live up to expectations and add that to the messy Titans quarterback situation, it is no wonder the Titans tied for the worst record in the league.
The Titans had three quarterbacks pass for more than 950 yards, but none over 1,450 yards. Entering 2015, rumors are swirling Tennessee plans to start Zach Mettenberger at quarterback and forgo drafting either Winston or Mariota. That is a risk general manager Ruston Webster and coach Wisenhunt will have to make, and live with. Drafting a quarterback at number two is building a partnership between one player and his head coach; if that quarterback fails, more than likely that head coach is out of a job. Bottom line for the Titans in 2015 will be acquiring and developing playmakers.
The Titans do not lack question marks heading into 2015….Will Bishop Sankey develop into a three down back? Is Mettenberger the answer at quarterback? Will he be able to work with and improve the young, promising receiving corps? Who will step up on defense? With all these questions, one could be answered with the second pick in the draft.
If Winston is not drafted number one overall (he should) then Tennessee should draft Jameis as their franchise quarterback, something they have not had since the late Steve McNair. If Winston is gone as most would expect, I would draft the most dominant defensive player in the draft Leonard Williams, over the Heisman Trophy winner Marcus Mariota.
Williams is a freak athlete that is as versatile a defensive lineman since JJ Watt entered the league out of Wisconsin. Williams did put up better combine results than Watt, and I believe could be just as dominant at the next level. The general public will want the golden boy Mariota drafted, but I am not sold on his game fully translating to the NFL as most expect. The risk drafting him at number two, is too high when a prospect like Williams is out there.
Pick should be: Leonard Williams-DE-USC
