Once Upon a Time Recap & Review: Flower Child
In Friday night’s episode of Once Upon a Time, Alice, Hook, and Mother Gothel have a family reunion in the cursed world, Lucy gets help from Samedi to fix his poisoned heart, Henry and Jacinda believe that his book is real, we finally find out what Mother Gothel’s endgame is, and true love’s kiss somehow doesn’t break the curse.
This week’s episode looks into Mother Gothel’s past and we see her wanting to fit in with humans as opposed to being a witch or whatever magical being she is. These girls she meets seem to be in awe of Gothel’s magic and asks her to teach them. But after hanging out with them for a few days, the girls reveal their true colors as they throw mud at her face and the leader of the group has Gothel’s small community of magical beings killed and destroyed.
Angry and upset, Gothel goes back to the palace where the girls are at a ball and Gothel kills everyone there with her magic. Well almost everyone. One of the girls is actually another witch or magical being and she becomes Gothel’s first recruit. Here we find out what Gothel really wants: to kill all humans because this palace full of people killed all of her kind. Then we skip forward to present time in Hyperion Heights, which is apparently thousands of years in the future, and Gothel now has an entire coven.
Gothel ends up seeking out Alice, or Tilly, in Hyperion Heights and tells her that she’s her mother. Tilly, despite being cursed, ends up believing her. But not until after she goes to Detective Rogers to tell him what happened. They follow Gothel and find her with the rest of the witches, who are ready to enact some type of spell. But it was exactly what Gothel wanted them to do: she threatens Rogers, tells Tilly that he’s her father, and manipulates Tilly to get her to join her coven to help enact some kind of spell. It’s not clear what that spell is or what it’s going to do.
Meanwhile, Lucy gets help from Samedi while Regina looks for magic so that she can save Henry. Samedi gets Lucy to find something that Henry or Jacinda brought with them to the cursed world and Lucy ends up finding Jacinda’s broken glass slipper. And it turns out that Samedi has the missing piece. After some magic, Facilier fixes Henry’s poisoned heart which we see via his creepy Henry voodoo doll.
But when Lucy looks through Jacinda’s old stuff, Jacinda is there with her, and is still figuring out whether or not she should believe in Lucy’s theory of the book being real. After they find the slipper, Jacinda’s convinced and rushes over to Henry to tell him she believes in it too. They finally kiss and…nothing happens. Lucy comes in afterwards and is just as shocked as we are. My guess is that whatever spell Gothel and her coven enacted has something to do with it. But we’re going to have to wait and see whether that’s true or not. And see how Regina, Lucy, Samedi, and maybe Rumple, plan to break this curse now that they know that true love’s kiss didn’t work.
