Once Upon a Time Recap & Review: “The Girl in the Tower”
In the latest episode of Once Upon a Time, we see Robin and Alice first meet, both in the past and the present, Regina enlists the help of Lucy to figure out Dr. Facilier’s intentions, and Rogers and Henry work to prove Tilly’s innocence.
In the enchanted forest, Robin catches Alice spying on Hook and the rest of the team but stops chasing her after she finds out who she really is: Hook’s daughter. Robin mentions the fact that she’s hunting a troll with Alice protesting by saying that she can’t kill the troll because he’s her friend.
They come across some other hunters in a tavern and even after disagreeing with her earlier, Robin stands up for Alice when everyone else calls her a troll lover, sending them into a prison in the process. Robin gets herself out at first to kill the troll but Alice eventually breaks free later on, scaring the troll away once again. After those hunters crowd around them again, Robin stands up for Alice once again because she realizes that her father’s legacy isn’t about killing a troll but about helping people who need it.
Later they find out that the troll only exists because Alice created him; she has magic inside of her and didn’t even know it. Because she created it, she’s able to make it disappear and she does when the troll reappears. Alice and Robin’s talk about their mutual trapped feelings is the beginning of their super sweet love story.
In present time, Regina distracts Dr. Facilier while Lucy does some recon in his apartment, finding tarot cards in the process. They do this without Zelena’s knowledge which leads to her finding out that Dr. Facilier is awake and therefore disrupting the distraction. Lucy gets caught (after she leaves her jacket at the apartment) but she still manages to find Dr. Facilier’s tarot cards, one of which is the death card.
He confronts Regina and just outright tells her what his plans are, which is obtaining the Dark One’s dagger. What he wants to use it for and why he needs to manipulate Tiana for it is unknown and a little confusing if I’m being completely honest because one, what does she have to do with the dagger, but more importantly, what does he plan to do with it? Plus, why didn’t Regina just tell Zelena about him and her plan to spy on him before?
Meanwhile, Rogers and Henry work together to try to find an alibi for Alice after Rogers takes her away from the crime scene. Alice doesn’t remember where she was at the time of murder and apparently no one else in the town seems to know her, despite the fact that she knows everyone. But eventually, they find out that the troll statue at the bridge (which reflects the troll she created in the fairy tale realm) has a camera in its eye, which places her at the bridge at the time of the murder. But before they find the camera, she meets Robin, who’s cursed name is apparently Margot (I had to put subtitles on just to catch her name) who just got back from Tibet after Zelena’s left her dozens of messages to come home.
I’m not quite sure what the writers are doing with Alice in present time. Other than the nice tie backs to the past with her feeling alone. But her constant characteristic of being confused at some points but somehow knowing about Eloise being evil. I never know whether or not she’s clueless or knows more than she’s letting on, or if she needs to kept on meds in order for her not to remember everything. Either way, I hope she figures it all out eventually.
As far as seeing the start of Alice and Robin’s romance, it’s absolutely adorable. And it finally looks like the writers are giving us the LGBTQ story line that fans have been asking for, and doing it for more than just an episode or two this time. However, I’m not into the Regina and Dr. Facilier coupling but there’s still a lot we don’t know there; apparently they were together in the past and they clearly still have feelings for each other, even though Regina’s being cautious about it (which is smart because he’s Dr. Facilier). But I also still have a soft spot for Regina and Robin Hood’s romance, which in a sense, still lives on in the Enchanted Forest realm, but I still wish they were together with the OG Regina (#OutlawQueen).
