‘Orange is the New Black’ season review
(SPOILER ALERT!!!!) Orange is the New Black
Before I begin I want to mention if you didn’t see the message above, this may be filled with spoilers, so if you’re not caught up and finished with the fourth season, then I wouldn’t keep reading.
Season 4 was something I wasn’t excited for do to season 3. Like many other people, I felt that season 3 was underwhelming and didn’t do much at all. That being said, I feel the total opposite about season 4. Season 4 got back on track to what I loved so much about season’s 1 and 2. I felt for each of the characters and the struggles they were going through individually and or together, whether it was rape, racism, or death. The more and more I got into the season the more I felt attached to more characters, which in turn helped progress the story as different things were unraveling.
I started the season not caring what happened to Piper as she was trying to keep the “power” that she believed she had until is was taken from her. As she got burned, literally, I found myself feeling for Piper again and hoping for a come back. The several issues that went on in this season felt intense and was executed in a way that didn’t feel like too much even though each thing was pretty heavy. They did a great job in keeping that balance of light humorous things with the dark, gritty, and ugly things. This season was able to make me appreciate season 3 more, showing that season 3 was more of a set up season for the things to come into effect in this season.
This season was able to capture what seems to be one of the big problems happening in our society now, dealing with racism and authorities over abusing their power over others. It was able to fit all this into a prison and at the same time, reveal different things about the characters to continuously drive the story, keeping the audience interested.
To focus on the biggest things to happen this season, the death of Poussey and the cliffhanger of the prisoners gaining some control of the prison as they get a gun. This was a great ending as fans are restless to see what will unfold next season.
Overall this season isn’t my favorite but is a major step up from season 3. It has a bit of a slow start but does a great job in keeping things escalating and entertaining for the audience. I would give this season a B+ and I am excited to see what happens next.
