Pacific Rim 2

Being a fan of Guillermo Del Toro’s epic tribute to giant robots and monsters Pacific Rim has been tough over the last few years.

Immediately after the release of his 2013 blockbuster, Del Toro himself tantalized fans with ideas for more Pacific Rim, including not only a sequel tentatively scheduled for a 2017 release, but also the possibility of a TV spin-off. In the months that followed, however, no news was released, and as the months turned into years, most fans gave up hope of any further adventures in the Pacific Rim universe.

That all changed this afternoon with just two tweets from actor John Boyega:

The London-born actor was recently catapulted to stardom thanks to his role as the male lead in J.J. Abrams’ Star War: The Force Awakens.

Reports state that Boyega will play the son of Stacker Pentecost, Idris Elba’s character from the first Pacific Rim.

Pacific Rim 2 will be directed by Steven S. Deknight, whose previous work includes creating the Starz series Spartacus and its spin-offs, and showrunning both seasons of Netflix’s Daredevil.
