The New Orleans Pelicans head coaching vacancy is one of the more intriguing job openings in the NBA, and for good reason. The Pelicans have the next great star that is ready to rule the NBA in Anthony Davis, teamed with a solid core that consists of Jrue Holiday, Tyreke Evans and Ryan Anderson should make any coach feel comfortable they will have the roster needed to compete in the ultra-competitive Western Conference for years to come.

New Orleans management, specifically GM Dell Demps has interviewed multiple candidates including Jeff Van Gundy, Vinny Del Negro and for a second time Alvin Gentry.¬†Gentry is currently an assistant coach on Steve Kerr’s staff with Golden State and has coached over 700 games as an NBA head coach. Sadly, his record is sub-.500 and he has not proven to be an effective head man for a ball-club.

Gentry is known as an offensive-whiz, preferring a more up-tempo style, dependent on ball-screens and shooting the three-point shot. He could fit in nicely with Holiday and Anderson in New Orleans, but as Doc Rivers lead-offensive assistant when he was the Clippers last year, he led Black Griffin and company to the least efficient offense in the NBA.

The Pelicans have the ability to land a big-name head coach, either in Van Gundy who has made it known he wants the gig, or the recently fired Tom Thibodeau, who I believe can instantly upgrade the Pelicans team to a top-five team in the West. Pairing the best defensive coach, with the best defensive player in the league can take New Orleans to a level it did not see under former coach Monty Williams.

The question is, what direction will Demps take this franchise?
