Saturday night the San Diego Chargers announced that they have an agreement in place on an extension with quarterback Phillip Rivers. After trade rumors swirled around Rivers around the draft, the team decided to extend their franchise player for four years at over 80 million, which will go through the 2019 season.

Rivers has been with the Chargers his entire career and has been very successful over his nine years with the team. River’s career was on a bit of a decline from 2011 through 2012 as he posted career highs in interceptions in one year and fumbles the other year. In 2013, though, Rivers’ career received a jolt as he went back to being an elite quarterback under new head coach Mike McCoy. Rivers has been extremely durable starting all 16 games since 2006. Rivers has also shown great toughness throughout his career. His toughness was on full display during the 2008 postseason when his team reached the AFC Championship game with Rivers playing with an ACL tear in his right knee.

At 33, Rivers should still have a few years left of his prime and after that he should still be a very good quarterback in the league. The team has added young playmakers the past few years to help Rivers including wideout Keenan Allen in 2013 and running back Melvin Gordon this past April. The Chargers should once again be in the middle of the playoff hunt in 2015, and with Rivers at quarterback, the Chargers should continue to be competitive for years to come.
