Matthew Berry

Can we stop praising Matthew Berry as a fantasy genius? I completely understand fantasy football is an inexact science and there is no true “expert”, but he is consistently wrong more times than he is right.

I wrote a column over the summer bashing his preseason predictions (mainly because I disagreed with 80% of them). I received a lot of backlash–but I stand by my assessment of Berry.

Every week he brings out a Love/Hate column and fantasy players actually decide their lineups based on his advice. STOP doing that. Let’s look at his Week 1 Love/Hate and show just how inaccurate he was….

Who did Matthew Berry LOVE in Week 1…

Hopefully you didn’t start Palmer based on Berry’s advice. (AP Photo/Matt York)

Aaron Rodgers: 28 of 42 311 yards 1 TD 1 INT  (10th QB fantasy points)

Carson Palmer: 27 of 48 269 yards 1 TD 3 INT’s (19th QB fantasy points)

Eli Manning: 29 of 38 220 yards 0 TD’s 1 INT (22nd QB fantasy points)

Christian McCaffrey: 13 carries 47 yards, 5 catches 38 yards 0 TD’s 1 Fumble lost (22nd RB fantasy points)

Bilal Powell: 7 carries 22 yards, 5 catches 17 yards 0 TD’s  (29th RB fantasy points)

Rob Kelley: 10 carries 30 yards 0 TD’s (54th RB fantasy points)

Larry Fitzgerald: 6 catches 74 yards 0 TD’s (17th WR fantasy points)

Martavis Bryant: 2 catches 14 yards 0 TD’s (63rd WR fantasy points)

Brandon Marshall: 1 catch 10 yards 0 TD’s (65th WR fantasy points)

Eric Decker: 3 catches 10 yards 0 TD’s (57th WR fantasy points)

Zay Jones: 1 catch 21 yards 0 TD’s (60th WR fantasy points)

Jack Doyle: 2 catches 41 yards 0 TD’s (18th TE fantasy points)

All of these guys underperformed and I’m sure the owners who started them Week 1 would go ahead and say they did not LOVE them…

Who did Matthew Berry HATE in Week 1…

2016 Fantasy Football Strength of Schedule
Berry said Stafford would be a bust in Week 1. He went on to have the 2nd most fantasy points out of all the QB’s. (USA TODAY Sports)

Dak Prescott: 24 of 39 268 yards  1 TD, 28 yards rushing (9th QB fantasy points)

Matthew Stafford: 29 of 41 292 yards 4 TD’s 1 INT (2nd QB fantasy points)

Two of the best QB’s from Week 1—but if you listened to Berry you would’ve stayed away. Hmmm.

What did Matthew Berry HIT on…

With Scott Tolzien at QB, not many fantasy players trusted Hilton this week. (AP Photo/Bill Kostroun)

Berry hit on some of his HATE column with the following players…

Paul Perkins: 7 carries 16 yards 0 TD’s (46th RB fantasy points)

Seahawks RB’s: 18 carries 90 yards 0 TD’s

TY Hilton: 3 catches 57 yards 0 TD’s (44th WR fantasy points)

Allen Robinson: 1 catch 17 yards 0 TD’s–hurt in first quarter (62nd WR fantasy points)

Eric Ebron: 2 catches 9 yards 0 TD’s (31st TE fantasy points)

Congrats Matthew! You hit on very obvious choices like a bad Paul Perkins, a plethora of Seattle running backs speaking in generalities, TY Hilton with a little loop caliber QB, A-Rob because of a 1st quarter injury and Eric Ebron who really has never done anything in fantasy football.
