Power Rangers 2017 Movie Review
It’s been a couple of days after seeing the new Power Rangers movie, and I’m officially down from my high, and the immediate rush of nostalgia I felt after leaving the theater (especially after the huge fan service they paid us by playing the original song when they grabbed the Zords) is finally out. I can now write an honest unbiased review on it.
As a child of the 90’s I was both excited and scared walking into the movie, because as we all know the movie is different, and tries really hard to separate itself from the show that it is based on. We also know different isn’t always better.
So here are my thoughts on the movie:
What I Liked:
Rita Repulsa: Yes her, I really enjoyed Elizabeth Banks portrayal of the villain Rita, it was the most reminiscent of the 90’s show. From her mannerisms, to the way she talked, I really love how she was handled.
Billy Cranston: The smart guy/Blue Ranger. RJ Cyler, was in my view the highlight of the movie, he was fun to watch and he completely stole all the scenes he was in. He also helped strengthen the bond between his and Dacre Montgomery (Jason Lee Scott/Red Ranger) character arc, who in my opinion didn’t fair too well in the beginning of the movie as the leader of the group.
The story in the 2nd half of the movie was when I was back into the movie, I would say right after the camp fire scene, when the teenagers finally figured out that they wanted to be power rangers.
Oh and lest I forget, this movie is the 1st in recent memory to have a bi-curios character in a Superhero/Comic book Movie. (Yes the Power Rangers are superheroes and currently have a comic book from Boom! Studios) so yes thank you Power Rangers for being inclusive and groundbreaking in the Cape Movie genre.
What I didn’t Like:
In the 1st half of the movie, the story was boring, drawn out, and bogged down by the character development. While character development is necessary in a reboot, so you can differentiate it from the original, it is also good to note that some of the best reboots take major elements from the original and layer them well into the remake. This movie didn’t do that, as I stated earlier it tried so hard to separate itself from the show it is based upon, and then forgot all about that in the 2nd half of the movie.
The story point I praised earlier about the movie being inclusive was brought up once and brushed off. As if to say “Hey we did it, now that we got that out the way let’s move on.” I feel it was a missed chance to expand on that since they were so inclined to add it into the movie. (Don’t get me wrong, I am happy they did that.)
That’s it for what I didn’t like because anything else I write will be nitpicking.
In conclusion, The Power Rangers was an all around good movie (NOT GREAT), worth seeing, and very enjoyable. In a year that has already brought us, The Lego Batman, and Logan 2 movies that have received critical praise, this movie unfortunately didn’t bring it.
It will however satiate the fan of the shows with certain relics sprinkled throughout, a couple of exciting cameos and a mid credit scene that would also make you jump out of your seat. (I damn near jumped out of mine).
Was its Rotten Tomato Score justified? To me NO!
Will I go see it again? NO. But I am happy I saw it.
Were the teases by Rita, and mid credit scene enough to make me want more (a sequel). Hell YEAH!
With Saban announcing a 6 movie slate that started with this movie, lets hope the franchise can fix its issues moving forward, count me in for 5 more Power Rangers movies.
