Premier League Predictions: 10-6
As we move closer to the top of the prediction table, it’s time to look at the bottom end of the Premier League Top 10. Be sure to compare to the pre-season predictions here!
Pre-season prediction: 1st
Current position: 6th
It all begins with Philippe Coutinho. It’s going to end with him as well. Back during the summer transfer window, FC Barcelona worked hard to replace the departed Neymar. Coutinho was their top target and he was as keen to join them. Liverpool did everything they could to block a deal and in the end Coutinho remained on the roster and has played this season after coming back from injury and earning the trust of manager Jurgen Klopp. But with the January window looming, most likely that is when Coutinho will depart. Liverpool can’t even come close to the Top 4 let alone the Premier League title without Coutinho playing for them. For now they’re playing to the best of their ability but it will drop if and when Coutinho leaves. There’s no one in the immediate radar they can transfer in to truly replace what Coutinho brings to the midfield and left wing attack.
9. Huddersfield Town
Pre-season prediction: 20th
Current position: 13th
Seeing the promoted teams doing so well is rare. Huddersfield were the least favored team to stay up in the pre-season prediction but have proven anything but. Huddersfield can run with the top flight and possibly more if they can add to the squad in the January window, 9th would be an amazing finish for their first time in the Premier League. This team is capable, time is all they need to pull a higher chemistry.
Pre-season prediction: 9th
Current position: 10th
For a team that gets picked apart by bigger clubs for their best players, Southampton know how to stay in the Top 10. Virgil Van Dijk is still in the team for now so that shores up some issues. If he is sold, Southampton will make an amazing profit off of him and they’ll be able to rebuild their team in some areas while still developing talent. So far, this is a team this season that is very solid.
7. Newcastle United
Pre-season prediction: 14th
Current position: 9th
The last of the great promoted teams couldn’t be more of a surprise than Newcastle. A team that a couple of seasons ago was in shame being bounced from the Premier League. They rebuilt in the Championship division and Newcastle have come back with a vengeance to remain in the Premier League for years to come. Their team is filled with solid players and with great potential and they should finish right where they currently sit at this point in the season.
Pre-season prediction: 17th
Current position: 8th
A lot of Watford’s success is manifested in their will to not fight relegation. This season they’re playing with more urgency against the top teams and it’s resulted in a current position that is amazing. They can keep this up and with the January window coming up, that’s the opportunity to strengthen the team and give Watford a strong finish. There’s a possibility for them to go higher or lower but 6th seems very solid for what this group has produced so far this season.
