Quenton Nelson Draft Profile

Quenton Nelson draft profile

Strengths:

  • Powerful
  • Good pad level at all times
  • Aggressive
  • Solid lateral movement
  • Leg drive
  • Compact and powerful punch
  • Hand strength

Analysis: Take one look at Quenton Nelson and you can understand why he would be a first round pick in the NFL Draft. He is built with wide hips, broad chest and powerful limbs. Known for intimidating power. Rarely beaten by power alone. Comes out of the blocks with good pad level. Nelson is extremely aggressive at the point of attack and isn’t happy until he is imposing his will. Watching him work double teams along with teammate Mike McGlinchey was a joy on tape. He uses plus leg drive to cave-in down blocks. Moves laterally and in space with adequate fluidity. Once he gets his hands on a defender, they are not escaping. Best pure run blocker in the draft.

Weaknesses:

  • Drops head when contacting defender
  • Has whiffed against pass rushers with quick arm over moves
  • Need improvement on pulls
  • Durability concerns

Analysis: Nelson has a tendency to drop his head into contact in front of him. Will lose sight of his target and whiff against slanting, arm-over specialists. He was a bit slow coming out of his stance on pull blocks, almost a sudden hitch–something that should be able to be improved upon with proper coaching. He has room for improvement with his pass blocking and he may have to expedite his pace against NFL defenses. He comes with some durability concerns, dealing with multiple injuries during his career at Notre Dame.

What the scouts say: “He’s so unique because he’s big, but he’s not fat. He’s one of the best run blockers I’ve ever evaluated, but he’s not a liability in pass protection Mike Iupati is. He’s also an alpha who can bring and ass-kicking mindset into your position room.” – NFC team personnel executive
