Raekwon McMillan-LB-Ohio State
Size: 6’2 240lbs

Raekwon McMillan

Strengths:

  • Takes great angles
  • Play quickness
  • Anticipation
  • Hand usage
  • Reads QB’s eyes
  • Decent in zone coverage

Analysis: Raekwon McMillan could not pull off the ‘double-Butkus’ which rewards the best LB in the nation. He won it in high school (2013) but fell short at Ohio State. He understands angles of pursuit better than most and takes those angles directly to the ball carrier. He can outpace pulling guards to the spot with his play quickness. Reads his keys and responds. Plays with good anticipation of lane choice by the runner. Attacks hands-first into blockers with good arm extension to keep his frame clean. Good zone-cover ability. Reads quarterback’s eyes and slides into passing lanes.

Weaknesses:

  • Struggles against larger lineman
  • Block shedding
  • Change of direction
  • Struggles in man coverage

Analysis: While McMillan is one of the best LB’s in the draft taking angles to the ball carrier, he struggles when larger offensive lineman are in the hole. His block shedding will need some work when pulling guards get their hands on him.┬áTends to play over the top of a block rather than under it. Slow to disengage and tackle. Tight in his lower half. Missing the quick, reactive change of direction to consistently secure shifty runners. Delayed in stop-start pursuit to the sideline. Has some limitations in man coverage.

NFL Comparison: Mason Foster

Draft Projection: Round 3
