Rays activate Austin Meadows from IL
Outfielder Austin Meadows will be activated from the injured list in advancement of Friday’s game against the Yankees. Nate Lowe was demoted to Triple-A after Wednesday’s game.
Meadows hit the injured list on April 21 due to a sprained right thumb, but did not miss as much time as was originally anticipated.
It’s good news for the Rays, since Meadows’ hot start was a huge reason for Tampa’s early-season success. Meadows was hitting .351/.422/.676 with six homers over 83 plate appearances at the time of his injury and will likely be right at the top of the Rays batting order tonight.
In other Tampa news, catcher Mike Zunino might be headed for the IL which will leave the team very thin at that position. Zunino left Wednesday’s game with “quad tightness”–backup Michael Perez is already sidelined with an oblique strain, so Nick Ciuffo was called-up.
If Zunino is also out for an extended period they will have to make another move, with Anthony Bemboom the most likely in-house candidate for promotion, though that would leave them with a very inexperienced duo.
Ciuffo has played 18 games in the majors and Bemboom, a 29-year-old who signed as a minor-league free agent after spending the previous 2 1/2 seasons at the Triple-A level with the Rockies and Angels has yet to get there.
