UFC 196 on eleven days notice we saw Rafael Dos Anjos be pulled from the highly anticipated event to only be replaced with Nate Diaz. It didn’t take long as the two biggest trash talkers in MMA today started getting personal with each other, calling each other out in conferences and face to face. At the end of the day it was Diaz who stood victorious after locking-in a rear naked choke on Conor McGregor forcing him to tap. The loss not only haunted McGregor, but we saw a different side of him leading up to the fight tossing water bottles and Monster energy cans to Nate Diaz and his team, and Saturday night he avenged his loss on that cold day in March.

In a fight (UFC 202) that had so much hype and crazy antics leading up to this past Saturday, it’s safe to say that it not only lived up to expectations, it surpassed it. I, along with many other fans couldn’t see Conor lasting all five rounds and that was one of my biggest concerns for him besides his ground game. Conor easily showed the adjustments he made scoring several knockdowns early on in the fight with his vicious striking. Nate Diaz being the veteran that he is held on and kept fighting like a true warrior countering with head and body shots, and capitalizing when Conor was trying to grasp for air. After seeing the fight for fourth time all the way through I could see why the fight could’ve easily been a draw. But I don’t mind that Conor narrowly edged out Diaz mainly for his early knockdowns in the fight. No doubt in my mind or anybody else’s mind for that matter that it’s an easy candidate for fight of the year.’

Does a trilogy make sense? I guess now that they’re 1-1 I could definitely see a rematch in the future. Personally I would like to see these guys have some fights in between instead of jumping straight into that conclusion. Conor still has unfinished business in the Featherweight division whether he drops the title or not, and Diaz needs to prove that he can draw huge numbers on his fights without Conor. Regardless if it’s at 155, for a title or simply over bragging rights the next time these two meet it’ll be sure to pull in a butt load of money. This was something the UFC needed anyways after the last two months have been overshadowed by heavily doping violations.
