rebel and a basketcase

On Thursday, February 23, 2017, Rebel and a Basketcase performed at The Satellite in Silverlake, California. Duo Evan Rachel Wood and Zach Villa originally teamed up to collaborate on the song “Oh Yeah” as a one-off, but enjoyed working together so much that they continued to record together, thus the band was formed. Taking their name’s inspiration from a shared love of John Hughes films, acting, and a desire to live in a Hughes-esque film world, their musical style can be described as electro-pop/glam rock with an 80s influence.

The band performed an energetic show for their fans “The Unicorns” who were eager to listen. Their set was filled with originals such as the emotional lament of “Just Friends”, to the upbeat tune “Girl on the Wire” which got the crowd dancing and jumping in time with Evan and Zach.

Guitarist/singer/song-writer Zane Carney, whose epic guitar solos and charismatic stage presence were met with cheers from the crowd, sat in with the band for two songs including “Escondido” as well as a cover of Til Tuesday’s 1980s hit “Voices Carry” which became a fan-favorite moment of the night. After the show, the band took time to meet with their supporters, sign autographs, take photos, and have a chat. Seeing the excitement on their fan’s faces really brought home how much the band embodies John Hughes film’s spirit and message of inclusion, self-expression, and relate-ability. Rebel and a Basketcase cannot be defined as a band in “the simplest terms” and “convenient definitions,” as the letter read at the ending of The Breakfast Club states. The band must be experienced live to truly and fully appreciate the creativity and connection they have with their audience both on and off the stage.

Be sure to keep an eye on the band’s website and social media sites to see where they’ll be performing next!
