Tuesday night, the Boston Red Sox announced that they have hired former Tigers President and GM Dave Dombrowski to be the President of Baseball Operations for the team. Dombrowski will not handle the business side of the team like he did in Detroit. He will only deal with the baseball aspect of the team as newly promoted Sam Kennedy will focus on the business side.  Dombrowski asked Ben Cherington to stay on as GM, but Cherington declined. He will, however, help Dombrowski with the change. The Red Sox seemed like a logical fit for Dombrowski since he left Detroit in early August despite reports that indicated the team was not interested in hiring him. Dombrowski does have a history with one of the Red Sox owners, John Henry, which may have played a role in the hiring. When Henry was the owner of the Marlins, Dombrowski was the GM in the late 90’s until the early 2000’s.

Dombrowski has had a lot of success with Detroit including division titles the last four seasons. This year, however, the Tigers had a number of injuries to key players which played a role in them being one of the most disappointing teams in baseball. With Dombrowski’s contract up at the end of the season, and the shortcomings of the team, now seemed like a good time for both parties to go their own way.

Dombrowski will have his work cut out for him in Boston. He needs to fix a team that has a number of long term contracts, some to players who have not lived up to those deals. Dombrowski will have his choice when it comes to the new GM and he needs to find someone who has the same outlook that he does for the team going forward. The job will be tough, but if there is anyone who can get the Red Sox back to a consistent winner, Dombrowski is that guy.
