Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan did not mince words when talking about his team’s kicker Dan Carpenter, and his lack of consistency in Training Camp and preseason games. In three preseason games, Carpenter has missed three field goals and an extra point, not good when you are making a first impression on your new coach.

Ryan was quoted saying, “I mean, [he] missed a couple of field goals and an extra point that is concerning because he missed a lot of camp,” Ryan said Tuesday. “We have to see him kick better. Quite honestly he needs to, we are the only team in the league that keeps a kickoff specialist; with that being said you do that to make sure you’re giving your kicker a chance to focus on one thing, and that is field goals.”

Carpenter was placed on the non-football injury list in the beginning of Training Camp, possibly a cause of some of his issues, but certainly not an acceptable excuse for a professional kicker. If the Bills release Carpenter, they will save $1.3 million off their salary cap this season and $1.76 off their cap next season.

With final cuts for all teams due by 4pm on Saturday, there will no doubt be a flurry of kickers on the open market, and it is possible the Bills kick the tires on some of them.
