Rousimar Palhares has a controversial history involving his submissions and tonight adds another mark to his resume. Palhares matched up with Jake Shields in the World Series of Fighting 22 main event. Now normally having the title of, ‘too dangerous for MMA’, would be a compliment but in Palhares’ case its a grim reality. For those who don’t know Rousimir Palhares was cut from the UFC after he held onto submissions for too long after a fighter has tapped out. Fighters only tap when they are in excruciating pain or rather not risk getting injured, so when a fighter doesn’t let go of a hold he can seriously injure his opponent. Last night, not only did he keep the hold well after Jake Shields had tapped out  he continued to torque Shields’ arm. When the referee finally forced the fighters apart Shields was understandably upset and threw a punch after the fight was called. A fight broke out cage side as Shields’ friend and training partner Nick Diaz, a star MMA fighter, took offense to Palhares’ actions. All of this makes the growing sport of MMA look worse. Palhares’ is a danger to the sport but more importantly a danger to other fighters. If it was his first offense you could cut him some slack but Rousimar Palhares has a rap sheet of offenses, including injuring other fighters.  When Dana White cut him from the UFC the many people praised Dana’s willingness to do what’s safest for the fighters, hopefully other promotions follow suit.
