San Diego vs Grand Canyon Preview

San Diego vs Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon Classic pits two undefeated teams against each other. The San Diego Toreros come in with a 4-0 record and an average margin of victory of 12.5 points per contest. Grand Canyon on the other hand is also 4-0 but has an even greater margin of victory–20 points per game. Something’s gotta give…

San Diego

San Diego has four players who average double figures: Isaiah Wright (13.8), Olin Carter III (13.5), Isaiah Pineiro (13.0) and Cameron Neubauer (11.8).

Pineiro led the way for the Toreros in their latest victory–he had 20 points, 7 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocks as San Diego defeated Arkansas-Little Rock 66-52 on Monday night despite going almost nine minutes without a field goal late in the second half.

Pineiro’s jumper at 10:47 of the second half put the Toreros (4-0), who made 9 of 11 field goals after halftime, ahead 54-34. They missed their next four shots and had four turnovers but made 5 of 6 free throws before until Pineiro scored again at the 1:59 mark.

Wright added 12 points, going 3-for-3 from three-point range, with seven rebounds and five assists San Diego, which is 4-0 for only the third time in 39 seasons. Cameron Neubauer also had three threes and scored 11.

The Toreros hit seven of their 10 three-pointers in the first half–showing just how dangerous they are behind the arc.

Grand Canyon

The Antelopes have won 11-straight games dating back to last season and are looking to make their first postseason berth in their first season of eligibility since moving to the Division I level.

Grand Canyon, who is coached by former NBA player Dan Majerle would have been a potential tournament team in the last few seasons if not for that waiting period for teams moving up a level.

The Antelopes are led by four-year starter and senior guard Joshua Braun–he is averaging 16.8 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. For his career, Braun is closing in on 1,500 points–currently sitting at 1,392 career points. If San Diego wants any chance of ending Grand Canyon’s winning streak, they will need to slow Braun down.

Prediction

No one realizes that this Grand Canyon team is good–like really good. I wouldn’t be surprised if they demolish their Western Athletic Conference competition when conference play begins, but until then they are settling for demolishing their non-conference opponents–evidenced by their average 20 point margin of victory.

San Diego has had one of their best starts in program history, but that won’t help them against Grand Canyon.
