San Francisco 49ers – Week 1 By The Numbers
The San Francisco 49ers came into Week 1 with a lot of question marks after a tumultuous off season that saw changes from top to bottom in the team and coaching staff. The overall consensus was that the rebuilt team would struggle to get wins this season.
I know its only Week 1, but the 49ers came to play and they impressed, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Navarro Bowman looks healthy and was all over the field Monday night (seven tackles, one sack). The Niners defense had five sacks, one interception, but more importantly they held Minnesota to 1-9 on third downs conversions (11%), and 0-2 on 4th down conversions. They got off the field when they needed to.
On offense, it was the Carlos Hyde Show. Hyde ran his way to 168 yards and two scores (from 10 and 17 yards) on 26 attempts, often wowing the crowd with nifty spin moves and creative cut backs. He definitely was the best #28 in the building on this day.
Quarterback Colin Kaepernick managed the Niners offense effectively, and as a result was able to keep the ball out of Adrian Peterson’s hands (only 10 rushing attempts). Though his passing numbers (17-26 for 165 yards) might not be that impressive, he was able to make a few nice plays down the stretch, both with his arm and his feet (41 yards rushing), to keep critical drives alive. The Niners finished with 25 first downs.
Vernon Davis and Garrett Celek led all receivers with 3 catches and Davis led in yards (47 yards).
Reggie Bush left the game with a calf strain. The coaching staff does not believe it to be serious.
Jarryd Hayne fumbled his first NFL punt return. He finished with 13 rushing yards on 4 attempts after replacing Bush at back up RB.
The Niners had 8 penalties for 57 yards. They also had a field goal blocked (Dawson) in the first quarter.
